The Protecting Victims Act (Bill C-16) continues to advance through the parliamentary process. This Act proposes consequential reforms to better protect victims and survivors of gender-based violence, including intimate partner violence and sexual violence, and to keep our kids safe from predators.

If passed, the Protecting Victims Act would criminalize coercive control, and increase penalties for a range of child sexual offences and the distribution of intimate images without consent (including deepfakes) and includes amendments to the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights.

In addition to legislative reforms, the government supports victims by funding provinces, territories and other groups through the Victims Fund – which is providing over $3.3M over 5 years to Ontario and $3.3M over 5 years to British Columbia to support and enhance services for victims.

Canada’s government continues to take stronger action to protect victims and survivors of crime through legislative reform and funding to support the provision of services to victims of crime.
