Have you thought about who would take care of your furry, feathered, or scaled family members when you’re gone? Your estate planning lawyer should review with you plans for your animal family members, and whether a pet trust is appropriate to provide for the ongoing needs of the pets you may leave behind.

This June will mark our 20th anniversary, and we’ve got some BIG things planned for the coming year.

In the last 20 years, we’ve seen an incredible growth in our Estate Planning and Estate Administration practice. Whether you are ready to create a Will and Powers of Attorney for the first time, or you are looking for a review and update or your current Estate Planning Documents, or you have been appointed as an Executor and are looking for assistance in the Estate Administration process, we continue to focus on providing a comfortable environment and knowledgeable and compassionate staff, who are here to assist clients and support them throughout this process.

Not only do our clients receive a thorough Estate Planning consultation, but at their signing appointment, they receive a folder to store their documents and which also contain a number of additional documents to assist them, and their loved ones. We’ve been hard at work updating and improving the Personal Information Booklet we provide to our clients, and we are so excited to include a Digital/Social Media section, and a section for Personal Health Information. This Booklet is such an amazing tool for our Estate Planning Clients, and is honestly the kindest thing they can do for their Executors and Powers of Attorney to help them be efficient and effective in their appointed roles.

We are also improving the services we provide our Estate Administration clients. We will soon be offering a preliminary meeting with our senior Wills and Estates Clerk, Melanie, for Executors who have just lost a loved one and need to know where to start. At this preliminary meeting, an Executor can obtain Notarial copies of the Will and an Estate Administration booklet for them to complete and return to our office to assist in the completion of their file. We are also working on an expanded information booklet for Executors, with checklists and general estate administration information.

We haven’t forgotten about our Real Estate clients - the last three years have been a challenge in this industry, and the days of “simple” real estate transactions seem to be a thing of the past. Given the complexity and frequent last-minute challenges of real estate files, we have decided to limit the number of real estate files that we take on every month so that we focus on providing an even better client experience. We are developing additional resources for clients closing purchases, sales and mortgages with our office, to help our clients have a less stressful, and more enjoyable, closing.

Our 20 year anniversary is a time for celebration and reflection, and a continued commitment to our clients and our community. It has been such an honour to see the growth in client referrals, and there is no better compliment than when we have clients refer their children (and sometimes grandchildren!) to our office.

As we prepare to enter this milestone year, we want to thank our clients, and the various industry professionals that we work with, and that continue to refer clients to us, and say that we look forward to working together for years to come.

Please note that our internet and telephone is down due to the Rogers outage, so we are unable to have telephone or email communication with clients at this time.

Our Rogers access has been restored, and our phones and internet is working normally.

Thanks for your patience!

We are thankful that we all survived this weekend's storm. While our building suffered no damage, along with thousands of others in this are, we are currently experiencing a Rogers outage, so our telephone system is not working. Our internet is also with Rogers, however, we have some limited access to our email, as we have been able to connect through mobile hotspots. We appreciate your patience. If you require immediate assistance, please reach out to our office using the email address [email protected] and we will get in touch with you as soon as we can.

As Covid restrictions are being lifted, we are navigating our way through a “new normal”. Our priority throughout the last 2 years has been to provide legal services in a way that protects the health and safety of our clients, our community, and our staff. Of particular concern for us is that many of our clients are older, or medically vulnerable – particularly our estate planning clients who are seeking to put their affairs in order following a diagnosis of cancer or another terminal illness. For the continued protection of these medically vulnerable clients, we are maintaining a mask policy for all in-office appointments. We continue to offer a variety of mask-less appointment options to accommodate our client’s needs and preferences, such as telephone appointments for consultations, ZOOM/video appointments for non-estate document signing, and for clients who want to come to the office we offer parking lot appointments (similar to a drive-in movie experience, but for document signing). We also ask that clients contact us by telephone or email to pre-arrange a time to come to the office for document pick-up or drop-off – we recognize that many clients have enjoyed being able to “drop in” to our office before the start of the pandemic, however, we are located in a converted Victorian home, so our hallways and reception area are narrow and we cannot safely accommodate multiple clients inside our office at one time.

We want to sincerely thank all of our amazing clients for their continued support, particularly these last two years, and we look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Our office will be closed for the holiday season - our little elves have been working hard all year, for much of the year in difficult circumstances to keep our staff and clients safe, and will be enjoying some time with their families. We will be opening in the new year on January 4th. Wishing you and yours a safe and happy Christmas and New Year!

COVID-19 UPDATE TO ALL CLIENTS AND THIRD PARTY PARTNERS:

We are actively seeking out information as to how this morning's announcement by Doug Ford on behalf of the Government of Ontario will effect our clients, our staff and our office.

At this time, we are operating on the basis that real estate will be considered an essential service as it involves housing, and therefore our modified operating procedures will continue. However, if we are not exempt, we will notify our clients as soon as possible.

We appreciate that this is a very stressful situation for our Province, our community, our clients and our staff, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we try our best to update you as quickly as possible as information becomes available.

The safety of our community, clients and staff will remain our paramount concern.

We have no scheduled appointments tomorrow, Tuesday March 24, 2020, and as such, our doors will be locked. Some staff will be working from our office building, and some will be working remotely. If you have documents to deliver to our office for your file, please contact our office at 905-623-7744 to make arrangements for a drop-off and we will review our procedure with you. Documents by email or fax are preferred for the safety of our staff.

Please stay safe, and be kind of one another.

A sensible decision to protect some of our most vulnerable. Kudos.
