BANCROFT’S FINEST FIND THE LITTLEST ROAD CREW

Hello from Kelly at Think Turtle Conservation Initiative.

After the heavy rain Monday night and into Tuesday morning, we had a feeling it might be just what some turtle hatchlings needed to make their grand entrance.

Apparently, they thought so as well.

By 10 a.m. yesterday, the phone started ringing, and what followed was quite a day of little turtles, quick thinking and some pretty wonderful people.

That included members of the Town of Bancroft Public Works Crew who were busy with culvert work in the L'amable area when Darren and Chris happened upon a turtle nest hatching.

Not exactly the road crew they expected to encounter on the job that day, and definitely the smallest.

Think Turtle was contacted by Operations Supervisor Christine to let us know what was happening, and we arranged for a nearby resident to swing by and lend a helping hand. By the time turtle duty wrapped up, 11 or 12 little hatchlings were safely escorted to the water. Nice bit of teamwork!

Darren and Chris may have been camera shy, but this hatchling was apparently quite happy to make it’s photographic debut.

And So It Begins…

Turtle nests in the wild are hatching across the area, and September is typically the busiest time. Over the coming weeks, little turtles will turn up on roads, shoulders, driveways, trails, yards, parking lots and in some pretty unexpected places.

A big thank you to Darren, Chris and the Town of Bancroft Public Works crew for noticing these little turtles, looking out for them and reaching out to Think Turtle so we could help arrange the next leg of their journey. Thank you to the resident who helped the hatchlings.

These are the moments when community awareness really matters. Simply noticing wildlife, taking the time to care, and knowing when to call for a little backup can make a very real difference.

Way to go, Turtle Heroes!
