With the house that the architect Huib Hoste designed for lawyer Joris Lens he gives an interesting example of what he himself meant by ‘practical architecture’. Hoste believed that the plan of a house and the reinforced concrete skeleton were the universal bases of its success. Architecture meant ‘creating light, air and space’.
Hoste designed an efficient interior that took account of the practical demands of daily life. That functionality was the starting point of his architecture and beauty stemmed and grew from there. The skeleton is affirmed so as to open up the house and make it more spacious : 'A house is a complex of spaces. A room can be defined as a part of the space', Hoste wrote.

The house that the modernist architect Huib Hoste (1881-1957) designed for lawyer Joris Lens at Schuttersvest 7 in Mechelen in 1934, has been admitted to the prestigious selection of Iconic Houses, a network of architects’ houses that includes residences that have a significant meaning in modern architecture and are open to the public. This unique resource for travellers and lovers of 20th century houses, is online at iconichouses.org.
The website lists around 150 landmark houses from the 20th century by location, together with background information on their creators and related news stories. Being part of the network means an important recognition and an important step in the international dissemination of this work by Huib Hoste.
