VACANCY: HUMAN RIGHTS SPECIALIST – BALKAN REGION (Bulgaria or FYROM)
Just Rights Belgium is looking to expand and create Just Rights Europe, a European Human Rights law firm located either in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia or Bulgaria. This office located in the Balkan region will focus on litigation before the European Court of Human Rights against all member States of the Council of Europe, whereas Just Rights Belgium will focus on national cases in Belgium and potential cases against Belgium before the European Court of Human Rights.
To create Just Rights Europe, we are looking for a young, passionate and devoted human rights specialist to help us establish and manage the office in FYROM or Bulgaria.
Therefore, it is preferred that the candidate is of Macedonian or Bulgarian nationality as he or she needs to be familiar with domestic law.
1. Core functions and responsibilities
A. Organizational
A first set of functions are of an organizational character. In a first stage, you will establish the international litigation office in Bulgaria or FYROM on behalf of the founder of Just Rights Belgium, Mr. Zouhaier Chihaoui. In general, you need to advise Just Rights Belgium on the legal requirements to found the firm and consequently found the firm. Concretely this means you have to legally found the firm, look for offices, start an accounting system and make the office operational.
In a second stage, you will be responsible for incorporating the PR activities of Just Rights Belgium into Just Rights Europe, with a focus on the European dimension. In particular, this means translating the Just Rights website to Bulgarian/Macedonian in a simplified manner, as well as to as many as possible other languages from the Balkan region. Next to the website, you will equally take care of social media in the local language.
In a third stage, you will need to draft vacancies according to the needs of the firm, i.e. the input of cases and languages thereof. Subsequently you will screen and shortlist candidates, invite them for an interview, take competency tests and finally guide and manage them as their superior. Therefore, it is essential that you can independently research and apply the relevant social and labor regulations.
B. Analytical and logical
A second set of functions are of an analytical and logical nature as you will be responsible for (1) drafting thematic factsheets on specific human rights themes in English and in the local language, and for (2) translating local cases to English in a simplified manner, detecting the grievances, analyzing admissibility requirements and applying them to the case at hand, and finally for drafting and submitting individual applications to the European Court of Human Rights. In case your other skills would be extraordinary, these skills can always be taught if necessary.

A. Education & knowledge
- Master’s degree in Law
- Qualification as a barrister is desirable though not required
- Very good knowledge of human rights law
B. Languages
- Fluency in English is essential
- Fluency in either Bulgarian or Macedonian is essential
- Knowledge of other languages (of the Balkan region) is desirable
