❓How can the legal profession attract, support, and retain the next generation of lawyers?

This question was at the heart of CCBE Secretary General Simone Cuomo’s intervention at AIJA - International Association of Young Lawyers’s 64th International Young Lawyers Congress, but also of the longstanding dialogue between the CCBE and AIJA — with Simone Cuomo having the pleasure of meeting Arthur Stüssi, outgoing AIJA President, and Charlotte Tregunna, incoming AIJA President, both pictured.

Since 2023, the CCBE Young Lawyers Committee has been dedicated to addressing some of the key issues shaping the future of the legal profession:

🔸 attracting and retaining young talent;

🔸 the impact of AI and technological change;

🔸 and the conditions needed to support sustainable professional development.

📢 in | The CCBE, together with international legal and human rights organisations, expresses grave concern over the conviction of human rights barrister Chow Hang-tung on charges of incitement to subversion under Hong Kong SAR’s national security laws. She faces up to 10 years in prison.

❗Her conviction, following more than four years in pre-trial detention, raises serious concerns about the ability of lawyers to exercise their rights and engage in legitimate human rights activities without fear of prosecution.

The joint statement calls on the relevant authorities to:

🔹 Ensure her right to a fair trial and due process during sentencing and any appeal;

🔹 Ensure national security legislation complies with international human rights obligations;

🔹 Refrain from prosecuting or sanctioning lawyers for peacefully exercising their rights or carrying out their professional duties;

🔹 Protect lawyers’ ability to engage in public discussion on human rights, the administration of justice and the rule of law.

📢 à | Le CCBE, en collaboration avec des organisations juridiques et de défense des droits humains internationales, exprime sa profonde inquiétude face à la condamnation de l’avocate spécialisée dans la défense des droits humains Chow Hang-tung pour incitation à la subversion en vertu de la législation relative à la sécurité nationale de la RAS de Hong Kong. Elle encourt jusqu’à 10 ans de prison.

❗Sa condamnation, qui fait suite à plus de quatre ans de détention préventive, soulève de sérieuses inquiétudes quant à la capacité des avocats à exercer leurs droits et à mener des activités légitimes en faveur des droits humains sans craindre de poursuites.

La déclaration commune appelle les autorités compétentes à :

🔹 Garantir son droit à un procès équitable et à une procédure régulière lors de la détermination de la peine et de tout recours en appel ;

🔹 Veiller à ce que la législation en matière de sécurité nationale soit conforme aux obligations internationales en matière de droits humains ;

🔹 S’abstenir de poursuivre ou de sanctionner les avocats pour avoir exercé pacifiquement leurs droits ou accompli leurs obligations professionnelles ;

🔹 Protéger la capacité des avocats à participer au débat public sur les droits humains, l’administration de la justice et l’état de droit.

📢 Highlights from the 2026 ABA Annual Meeting

From 30 July to 2 August, CCBE President Roman Zavrsek and Secretary-General Simone Cuomo participated in the American Bar Association’s Annual Meeting in Chicago.

💡The programme provided a valuable forum to discuss shared priorities for the legal profession, including support for international justice institutions, the protection and independence of lawyers, the role of Bars in upholding the rule of law, and the growing impact of artificial intelligence on legal practice and justice systems.

During the meeting, Roman Završek and Simone Cuomo had the pleasure of engaging with ABA President-Elect Barbara Howard, Immediate Past President Michelle Behnke, and Executive Director Alpha M. Brady.

🤝 The Annual Meeting was also an excellent opportunity to strengthen international cooperation and meet leaders of the legal profession from around the world, including: International Bar Association (IBA) President Claudio Visco and Immediate Past President Jaime Carey T.; Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer (BRAK) President Ulrich Wessels; and Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) Vice-President and Tokyo Bar Association President Osamu Ishihara, together with JFBA International Affairs Officer Yayoi Hasegawa.

The CCBE looks forward to continuing this close dialogue with the ABA and its international partners.

📢 Les points essentiels de la réunion annuelle 2026 de l’ABA

Du 30 juillet au 2 août, le président du CCBE, Roman Završek, et le secrétaire général, Simone Cuomo, ont participé à la réunion annuelle de l’ABA à Chicago.

💡 Le programme a constitué un forum précieux pour discuter des priorités communes de la profession d'avocat, notamment le soutien aux institutions judiciaires internationales, la protection et l’indépendance des avocats, le rôle des barreaux dans le respect de l’état de droit, ainsi que l’impact croissant de l’intelligence artificielle sur la pratique juridique et les systèmes judiciaires.

Au cours de cette réunion, Roman Završek et Simone Cuomo ont eu le plaisir de s’entretenir avec la présidente élue de l’ABA, Barbara Howard, la présidente sortante, Michelle Behnke, et la directrice exécutive, Alpha M. Brady.

🤝 La réunion annuelle a également constitué une excellente occasion de renforcer la coopération internationale et de rencontrer des dirigeants de la profession d'avocat du monde entier, notamment : le président de l’Association internationale du barreau (IBA), Claudio Visco, et le président sortant, Jaime Carey ; le président du Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer (BRAK), Ulrich Wessels ; ainsi que le vice-président de la Fédération des barreaux japonais (JFBA) et président du Barreau de Tokyo, Osamu Ishihara, accompagné de la déléguée aux affaires internationales de la JFBA, Yayoi Hasegawa.

📢 in the | The CCBE, together with international legal and human rights organisations, expresses grave concern over the arrest of Chinese human rights lawyer Wu Shaoping by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the ongoing immigration proceedings that could result in his deportation to China.

❗Lawyer Wu Shaoping fled China after facing reprisals linked to his human rights work and sought asylum in the United States. He now faces a risk of refoulement despite the well-documented persecution of human rights lawyers in China.

The joint statement calls on the US authorities to:

🔹 Ensure that Wu Shaoping is protected against deportation or any other form of forced return to China;

🔹 Guarantee his fair trial rights throughout the immigration proceedings;

🔹 Give due weight to the risks faced by human rights lawyers in China when assessing his asylum application.

📢 aux -Unis | Le CCBE, en collaboration avec des organisations internationales de défense du droit et des droits humains, exprime sa profonde inquiétude face à l’arrestation de l’avocat chinois défenseur des droits humains Wu Shaoping par l’ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) américain et à la procédure d’immigration en cours qui pourrait aboutir à son expulsion vers la Chine.

❗L’avocat Wu Shaoping a fui la Chine après avoir subi des représailles liées à son engagement en faveur des droits humains et a demandé l’asile aux États-Unis. Il court désormais un risque de refoulement, malgré les persécutions bien documentées dont sont victimes les avocats défenseurs des droits humains en Chine.

La déclaration commune appelle les autorités américaines à :

🔹 Veiller à ce que Wu Shaoping soit protégé contre l’expulsion ou toute autre forme de retour forcé en Chine ;

🔹 Garantir son droit à un procès équitable tout au long de la procédure d’immigration ;

🔹 Prendre dûment en compte les risques encourus par les avocats défenseurs des droits humains en Chine lors de l’examen de sa demande d’asile.
