Legacy Attorneys is pleased to share that our Head of Chamber, Barrister Kazi Akhtar Hosain, together with member of our team Mr Md. Maksudur Rahaman, participated in a high-level Training Session on Movable Finance, jointly organised by the SME Foundation and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) at The Westin Hotel, Dhaka.

The session was facilitated by Mr Jinchang Lai and Ms Lin Huang, and was honoured by the presence of Dr Md Habibur Rahman, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, as Chief Guest.

The training examined the legal and institutional framework of Movable Finance, an emerging credit mechanism designed to enhance access to finance by enabling the use of movable assets as collateral, particularly for SMEs. Legacy Attorneys is laways welcoming and ready to impart its legal expertise to support the effective implementation of movable finance within Bangladesh’s financial system.

The Legacy Attorneys is pleased to announce a significant development in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) initiated to address the deforestation of the Mirsarai Reserved Forest for the establishment of the Mirsarai Economic Zone in Chittagong.

After coming across the news article on the daily The Business Standard “Factories rise as forest falls: Mirsarai’s troubling trade-off”, The Legacy Attorneys filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on a pro bono basis to stop the alarming deforestation of the Mirsarai Reserved Forest linked to the Mirsarai Economic Zone now renamed as National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ).

We are pleased to share that the Hon’ble Court has been pleased to issue a Rule Nisi and directed the authorities to maintain status quo in terms any further development or construction of the NSEZ, ensuring no further forest clearing or development until final adjudication.

The submission before the Court was made by our Head of Chambers, Barrister Kazi Akhtar Hosain, assisted by our Associate, Barrister Shahrukh Kabir Bhuiya ( Shahrukh Ribak). The entire Team Legacy played crucial roles in achieving this milestone.

This case marks a vital step towards restoring the lost greenery of the Mirsarai region, protecting endangered wildlife habitats, and preserving ecological balance for future generations.

The motion seems to me to be robust and timely, considering the nowadays tech advancement. In one hand this will save time and ensure transparency and accuracy, however, in other hand this attempt may endanger depositors/ taxpayers’ security of deposits. Hence, strong mechanism should be in place as to what information to be accessible to and who will be authorised to have access to.

From this year, the NBR has made online submission of tax returns mandatory for all individuals, with a few exceptions
