The Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its international, in-person foreign training programme, reaffirming its commitment to advancing professional excellence in arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

In collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, BIAC organized a two-day programme titled “Introduction to International Arbitration” on 19–20 April 2026 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The programme brought together legal professionals, corporate practitioners, and aspiring ADR specialists, equipping them with essential knowledge and practical insights into international arbitration. Participants engaged in dynamic sessions, case-based discussions, and interactive learning led by experienced practitioners in the field.

Programme Outcomes:
Participants who successfully completed the course are now eligible to:
• Apply for Associate Membership of CIArb
• Progress to Module 1 of the International Arbitration Pathway
• Receive a joint certificate issued by CIArb Sri Lanka and BIAC

Course Tutors:
Mr. Amrit Rajapakse
A distinguished dispute resolution counsel, arbitrator, and legal consultant with over two decades of experience in litigation and ADR. A Fellow and Director of CIArb Sri Lanka Branch and a SIMI Accredited Mediator, he has acted in over 40 domestic and international arbitrations. He is affiliated with leading institutions such as the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, and the Maldives International Arbitration Centre, and is recognized in Chambers and Partners Asia-Pacific rankings.

Mr. J. Shanaka L. Cooray
An Attorney-at-Law with over twenty years of experience in commercial law, arbitration, and dispute resolution. He is a Director of CIArb Sri Lanka Branch and a SIMI Accredited Mediator, with extensive experience appearing before superior courts and arbitral tribunals. He is also empaneled with the Thailand Arbitration Center and the Mumbai Center for International Arbitration, and has played a key role in arbitration law reform initiatives in Sri Lanka.

This successful initiative reflects BIAC’s renewed global engagement and its dedication to capacity-building through international collaboration. The programme provided a valuable platform for participants to gain global exposure, develop specialized skills, and connect with professionals in the field of international arbitration.

We are especially grateful to Ms. Shehara Varia, Branch Chair of CIArb Sri Lanka, for her leadership, support, and commitment in making this programme a success.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to our esteemed trainers, partners, and participants for making this programme a resounding success. The Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) successfully concluded its one-day training programme titled “Alternative Dispute Resolution: Methods in Human Resource Management” on 29 January 2026 at the BIAC Auditorium. The programme brought together HR professionals, legal practitioners, corporate representatives, and academics with a keen interest in strengthening dispute resolution practices within organizational settings.

The first session was conducted by Mr. AKM Mafrul Huq, an experienced HR Professional of over 18 years and currently General Manager of IFAD Group, who delivered an insightful presentation on the practical application of ADR mechanisms in workplace dispute management. His session highlighted the role of effective communication, negotiation, and preventive dispute resolution strategies in human resource management.

The second session was facilitated by Ms. Rawnak Jahan, Barrister-at-Law and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, who led an engaging discussion on the legal dimensions of ADR, emphasizing mediation and arbitration in employment-related disputes. Her session provided participants with valuable legal perspectives and real-life examples relevant to contemporary HR challenges.

The programme concluded with a certificate award ceremony, where certificates were distributed to the participants by Mr. K A M Majedur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of BIAC, along with the two distinguished trainers. The ceremony marked the successful completion of the programme and recognized the participants’ commitment to professional development.

The event was successfully coordinated by BIAC Secretariat members, including Senior Counsel Mohammad Anisul Haque Emran and Assistant Counsel Sanjida Sohana. All IT and technical support for the programme were efficiently managed by Amit Das, IT and Administrative Officer at BIAC.

BIAC extends its sincere appreciation to both trainers for their valuable contributions and to all participants for their active and enthusiastic engagement throughout the programme. The event reaffirmed BIAC’s continued commitment to promoting effective, professional, and sustainable dispute resolution practices in Bangladesh.
