C. T. Karim & Partners have contributed BDT 1,11,111/- to the 'জুলাই শহীদ স্মৃতি ফাউন্ডেশন' as a humble tribute to the martyrs and victims of the July genocide.

We pray for the salvation of the departed souls of our martyrs and the recovery of all injured protestors currently under going treatment.

Lastly, we are hopeful, that with our collective contribution the 'জুলাই শহীদ স্মৃতি ফাউন্ডেশন' will be able to rehabilitate the families of the martyrs and injured protestors. We wish the foundation success in carrying out this challenging task in a transparent and equitable manner.

Section 83 of the VAT Act-2012 has to be one of the most draconian laws that is a blank cheque for VAT officers to harass business owners and citizens.

In essence, if you carefully read between the lines, other than a place of residence (আবাসস্থল), VAT officers can essentially enter into any business or commercial office at ANYTIME without even serving any kind of PRIOR NOTICE and demand to seek any kind of information.

So, effectively they can pop in to your office at say 5:55 PM and ask you to hand over all sales and other information of your organization immediately. There is no scope to argue about the protection of confidentiality of the information that they are demanding. And if you don't comply they threaten to sieze all computers, laptops, hardrives and other data storage devices. All of this is clearly permissble under Section 84. (Yeah, read that again).

Now comes the part as to who has the power to exercise/authorise such actions? Is it a magistrate? Joint District Judge perhaps?

NOPE! Subsection (1) authorizes an officer of the rank of "Assistant Commissioner" to freely decide if he is in the mood to exercise any of the draconian powers under this provison.
