Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ).

We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Her life was one of profound service and historical significance for our nation. As the first woman elected to lead the country, she broke barriers and served the people during pivotal times. Her contributions to Bangladesh's political journey will be remembered by history.

We extend our most sincere sympathies to her family, her son Tarique Rahman, her party members, and to all who held her in esteem.

We pray for her soul to find eternal peace and for her loved ones to be granted patience and strength during this difficult time.

Begum Khaleda Zia is currently receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during these difficult times. We also hope that people will refrain from making controversial comments about the difficult decisions the family has had to take in these critical times.
This is not the time for political point-scoring or creating divisions. Right now, the family deserves our sympathy, our respect, and our kindness. Let us stand with them when they need it the most.

On 16 October 2025, reports surfaced that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was ready to sign the July Charter, while Jamaat-e-Islami remained undecided and the National Citizens Party (NCP) hesitated without a clear implementation roadmap. Yet, the most striking absence went largely unnoticed — the 'Awami League', a party still supported by nearly a quarter of the electorate.

This article examines the 'constitutional implications' of excluding such a major political force from the reform process and questions whether the 'July Charter' can claim 'true legitimacy' without broad-based participation.

While the Interim Government refrained from banning the Awami League outright, its restrictions on political activity and limited inclusiveness risk undermining the reform’s 'legal and democratic credibility'. Drawing parallels with South Africa’s transition, the piece argues that inclusive participation, even from discredited parties, is essential to strengthen the legitimacy of any new constitutional order.

Read the full article to explore how the 'constituent power of the people'—born out of the 2024 student movement—shapes the legality and future of Bangladesh’s constitutional transformation.

Three days have passed since the Mirpur chemical warehouse fire claimed 16 innocent lives, yet the owner of Alam Traders — the illegal warehouse responsible — remains free.

Families are grieving, children are orphaned, and workers’ bodies lie unclaimed. The air in Shialbari is still toxic, residents are still choking, and the accused are still missing. How long must impunity protect those who profit from death?

Authorities themselves admit: the warehouse was declared illegal and served three separate notices. Yet no one shut it down. This is not negligence — it’s a crime of silence, corruption, and disregard for human life.

We urge law enforcement and the relevant ministries to act immediately — arrest the responsible individuals, hold the approving officials accountable, and ensure justice for the victims who worked and died in these unsafe death traps we call “factories.”

Every delay in justice deepens the stain on our conscience.
Every illegal factory left unchecked is another tragedy waiting to happen.

Our country cannot afford another Mirpur, another Nimtoli, another Churihatta.
Justice delayed is not just denied — it’s repeated.

Our country has witnessed some of the gravest violations of human rights in recent years and continues to navigate through a period of deep political uncertainty. At such a critical juncture, meaningful dialogue and institutional reform are essential to rebuilding public trust and ensuring justice for all.

Today, our Partner, Barrister Ehsan Siddiq, of The Law Counsel, joined a national consultation on the draft National Human Rights Commission Ordinance, 2025, held at the InterContinental Hotel, Dhaka — serving as Moderator of the distinguished Panel Discussion.

The event, attended by eminent figures including Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Dr. Asif Nazrul, Adilur Rahman Khan, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, UNDP Resident Representative Stefan Liller, and representatives from the Swiss and Danish Embassies, focused on strengthening the institutional and legal framework for human rights protection in Bangladesh.

In an era where justice and accountability are paramount, this initiative marks a vital step toward ensuring that the National Human Rights Commission becomes not only a moral force but also a legally empowered body capable of real enforcement and impact.

At The Law Counsel, we remain committed to contributing to national dialogues that aim to restore justice, uphold the rule of law, and reinforce the foundations of democracy in Bangladesh.

The July Charter Debate: Law, Politics & Bangladesh’s Future

The latest debate isn’t just about politics—it’s about Bangladesh’s constitutional future.

The Questions We Must Ask-
1- Was the Interim Government created under the Constitution—or through the people’s 'constituent power' ?
2- Can the July Charter be implemented under the current Constitution ?
3- Is BNP delaying reforms to keep power centralised ?
4- Has Jamaat realised too late that Bangladesh is already in a moment of constitutional change ?
