While Ghislaine Maxwell’s 20-year sentence for s*x trafficking is beyond fair considering the circumstances, the fact that the guilty verdict held up at all is quite surprising. When a juror disclosed post-verdict that he was the victim of s*xual abuse, the court rejected Maxwell’s argument that the juror was impermissibly biased. Any juror has an ongoing obligation to update the court of bias issues as they arise, but The Hon. Judge Nathan ruled the juror did not intentionally deceive the court. This will be questioned again in Maxwell’s subsequent appeal. The accused have a constitutional right to a fair trial and this is a core concept of our justice system.
