Approved work sponsors are going on a public register 📋

A new law lets Home Affairs publish each approved sponsor's business name and type, ABN and postcode, and how many workers it sponsors in which occupations. Workers will be able to check whether an employer is an approved sponsor before they accept a job.

Sponsors sanctioned for breaches are already listed separately by the Australian Border Force. The start date is set by the Government.

Can your family come on your Student visa? From 2 October 2026, mostly no.

A partner or children can still be included if you’re a PhD student, sponsored by DFAT or Defence, on a foreign government scholarship, or an eligible Pacific or ASEAN student. Family already on your current Student visa may be included in your next application in Australia. But family can’t be added after a Student visa is granted.

Sponsoring a worker? The sponsorship costs are the business's to carry.

Sponsors must not pass on or recover sponsorship, nomination or recruitment costs from the worker. Asking for or accepting a benefit in return for sponsoring someone is unlawful, and breaches can lead to civil penalties and a ban on sponsoring.

If anyone suggests the worker should pay to be sponsored, stop and get advice first.

Visa fees rose on 1 July — and this year it was much bigger than the usual annual indexation.

Around 25% on the visas people actually use:

• Skills in Demand (482): $3,210 → $4,015
• Partner (820/801): $9,365 → $11,710
• Employer Nomination Scheme (186): $4,910 → $6,140
• Student (500): $2,000 → $2,500

A Skills in Demand application for a worker with a partner and two children under 18 is now $10,040 in visa charges alone — before English tests, skills assessments, medicals or police checks.

And if you're an employer: the visa charge is only one of four costs. The sponsorship fee, nomination fee and the Skilling Australians Fund levy are separate — a 4-year 482 nomination for a larger business carries $7,200 in levy alone.

🇦🇺 New visa processing rules are in force — and they apply to applications ALREADY in the queue.

Direction 121 (482 visa) and Direction 122 (186, 189, 190, 491 + more) took effect on 19 September. Construction, healthcare, teaching, agriculture & meat-processing, resources, plus law-enforcement and defence roles go to the front of the line.

Already lodged? You're re-sorted under the new rules — no need to re-apply. And no, eligibility hasn't changed — this is a queue-order change, not new criteria.
