YES, You Can Face Multiple Charges for the Same Act in NSW

Here's what most people don't understand about Australia's legal system...

The Reality: Different governing bodies have separate jurisdictions - and they can ALL come after you for essentially the same conduct.

Real Example Scenario: Let's say you're a licensed professional who commits fraud:

✅ NSW Police can charge you criminally under the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW)

✅ ASIC can prosecute under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth)

✅ Your professional body (e.g., Law Society, Medical Council) can bring disciplinary proceedings

✅ Civil courts allow victims to sue for damages

All for the SAME underlying act.

Why This Happens:

🔹 Criminal law protects society (punishment)

🔹 Regulatory bodies protect industry standards (discipline)

🔹 Civil law compensates victims (damages)

🔹 Federal vs State jurisdictions overlap

Important: This isn't "double jeopardy". That only prevents being tried TWICE in the same criminal court for the same offence.
