Today, our Special Counsel Kristy Speirs appeared at the Downing Centre Local Court for a young mother charged with driving while suspended.

After carefully considering the circumstances of the offending, the client's personal circumstances and the significant impact a conviction and further loss of licence would have had on her and her young family, Kristy made submissions seeking a non-conviction outcome.

We are pleased to share that the Court granted a non-conviction outcome, allowing our client to retain her licence.

For our client, this was about much more than a court result. It meant being able to continue meeting her responsibilities and supporting her family.

Successful Outcome in Mobile Phone Offence
✅ Non-Conviction Obtained

Facing a mobile phone offence while already on a good behaviour licence can have serious consequences.

Acorn Lawyers represented a client charged with using a mobile phone while driving at Wollongong Local Court today.
The matter was particularly significant because the offence was committed whilst the client was subject to a good behaviour licence, placing them at risk of serious consequences, including the recording of a further conviction and the impact that may have had on their future.

After careful preparation and detailed submissions on our client's behalf, the Court exercised its discretion not to record a conviction.
This outcome highlights the importance of obtaining experienced legal advice, particularly where a traffic offence may have significant consequences for employment and future court matters.

Acorn Lawyers is pleased to welcome Kristy Speirs to our team as Special Counsel, leading and managing the firm’s Criminal Law and Regulatory Prosecutions practice.

Kristy is available to assist clients with advice and representation on all criminal law, traffic and regulatory prosecution matters.

Born and bred in the Illawarra, Kristy brings more than 20 years’ experience across criminal law, prosecutions, regulatory enforcement and advocacy. Her extensive background includes senior prosecutor roles with the NSW Police Force, the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

Having spent the majority of her career working in prosecutions and law enforcement, Kristy offers clients a unique perspective that many criminal defence lawyers have not experienced. She has extensive insight into how investigations are conducted, how evidence is gathered, analysed and tested, and where weaknesses can arise within a prosecution case. This experience enables her to provide strategic, practical and informed advice across a broad range of criminal law, traffic and regulatory prosecution matters.

Throughout her career, Kristy has appeared in a wide range of
jurisdictions including the Local, District and Supreme Courts and has extensive experience in complex criminal and regulatory prosecutions. She also has a particular interest in complex and regulatory prosecutions, including Heavy Vehicle National Law matters.

Kristy is passionate about advocacy and achieving strong outcomes for clients while providing practical, strategic and compassionate legal advice.
