Two principals. Two practice areas. One firm.

Ron spent 28 years in the NSW Police Force, much of it as a Senior Police Prosecutor. He now defends criminal and traffic matters, which means he has argued both sides of the same courtroom.

Amanda has spent 15 years in employment law, at Clyde and Co, the Fair Work Ombudsman and EY. In the course of her career, she has acted for both employers and employees.

That combination is the whole reason the firm exists.

Because a criminal charge does not stay in the criminal courts. Depending on your employment, criminal charges can trigger a disciplinary process, a suspension, a licensing issue, or a termination, and that process runs parallel or subsequent to your criminal charges. Most people end up briefing a second firm halfway through to manage the employment matters, at the point where the decisions in respect of criminal matters have already been made.

Here at Dorahy Davis Lawyers, both the criminal and employment get looked at from the first conversation and a strategy is developed at the outset to defend the criminal charges and employment matters.

We do not ask clients for reviews at the point they are most relieved.

We ask later, when the matter is closed and the relief has worn off.

A week of them came in, and the pattern was not what most firms would lead with. Nobody wrote about the result first. They wrote about being spoken to like a person, and about finally understanding what was happening to them.

That is what having two principals and no layers in between is meant to buy you. It is good to hear it worked.

Thank you to everyone who took the time.

Criminal and traffic matters answered 24/7.

Ron Davis has just featured on the Narelle Fraser Interviews podcast.

Ron spent 28 years with NSW Police, including his role as a Senior Police Prosecutor, before crossing to defence work. Thirty five years in the criminal justice system all up.

In the episode he talks about what that switch taught him, what police are actually looking for, and the advice he gives victims and witnesses who find themselves in a system nobody explains to them.

Listener note: between roughly the 19 and 20 minute mark Ron describes a distressing incident involving physical harm to a child.

What does your week look like without your licence?

It's the question our principal Ron Davis says people only ask themselves after a magistrate has already answered it.

"I see it constantly in traffic matters. Someone treats a court date for a driving offence like a parking fine. Turn up, plead guilty, get it over with. Then the magistrate disqualifies them, and suddenly they can't get to work, can't do the school run, can't run their business.

There is no such thing as a work licence.

What most people don't realise is that in a lot of traffic matters the outcome isn't fixed. There is room to move on the penalty, the disqualification period, and whether a conviction is recorded at all. But only if it's argued properly, and only on the day.

A section 10, found guilty but no conviction recorded, can be the difference between keeping your licence and losing your livelihood. It is not automatic. Someone has to make the case for it.

Ron spent 35 years in the criminal justice system, most of it with the NSW Police. Two doors from the Wollongong courthouse.
