“Baw Baw’s Future is Equal!
A call to action from Baw Baw residents for fairness and equality.
Our vision is equality for all, regardless of gender, culture, age, sexuality and/or ability.
Violence against women including, sexual assault and family violence, is both a cause and a consequence of gender inequality.
Equality for all is not a current reality and all steps towards equality are important, including how we name our places – our streets, landmarks, parks and monuments. Lack of women’s visibility and agency in leadership contributes to an unequal society.
Acknowledging and celebrating women’s, as well as men’s, achievements is a way of building an equal society. Globally and locally, too few public places are named after women.
The Place and Feature Naming Policy adopted by Baw Baw Council on 6 March 2024, with its 70% gender target, is a positive move towards fair and equal representation. We are proud that Baw Baw Shire Council have demonstrated their understanding of this barrier to gender equality and have recognised the importance of addressing this issue in our local communities.
Three Councillors are now moving to rescind this policy. We see this as a step away from the fairness that our community expects and deserves.
If you also feel strongly about this, standing up and taking action will help. Here’s how:
1. Write to Mayor McCabe and the supportive councillors expressing your gratitude, solidarity, and support.
2. Encourage the opposing councillors to endorse the policy and recognise the positive impact on gender equality and violence prevention.
3. Join us at the council meeting on Wednesday 3 April at 12:45pm at the West Gippsland Art Centre to observe the recission motion discussion and/or to speak for three minutes on this crucial issue. You can also make submissions in other ways shown here Council Meetings (bawbawshire.vic.gov.au)
