Queensland’s Jack’s Law has now been made permanent, significantly expanding police powers to conduct wand searches without a warrant in a range of public places.

In his latest blog, Lloyd Kennedy breaks down:

• What Jack’s Law is and why it was introduced
• Where police can conduct wand searches
• What happens if you refuse to comply
• The powers police may exercise following a scan
• The potential criminal consequences that may follow

Understanding your rights and obligations under these laws is important, particularly as the scope of police powers continues to expand across Queensland.

In Australia, parents have a legal obligation to financially support their children, usually until they turn 18.

Child support can cover a range of expenses, including everyday living costs, education and medical needs. The amount payable is assessed by the Child Support Agency using a formula that considers factors such as income, care arrangements and the number and age of children.

In some cases, parents may reach their own agreement, which can be formalised through a Limited or Binding Child Support Agreement.

Queensland law recognises the right to defend your home, but it is not unlimited.

Under section 267 of the Criminal Code, a person may use force to prevent or repel an intruder if they believe it is necessary, and that belief is based on reasonable grounds.

Each situation is assessed individually, and outcomes depend on the specific circumstances.

If you require advice, our Criminal Law team is here to assist.

Being served with a Domestic Violence Order application or Police Protection Notice can have immediate and serious consequences, particularly when temporary orders, strict conditions, and court deadlines are involved.

In this latest blog, Mathai Joshi explains the key steps respondents should take after being served, the different options available when responding to a DVO application, and why obtaining legal advice early is critical.

The article also explores what happens at the first Court appearance, the conditions that may be imposed under a Protection Order, and the process involved in contesting an application in Queensland.
