A partnership agreement isn't just about how you work together today. It's about what happens when life intervenes.

A co-owner goes through a divorce. A partner's financial position deteriorates. Someone's health changes and they need to step back. The question is whether you've already agreed on how you'll handle them.

When you do, everyone knows what's coming. When you don't, you're making it up under stress, often with legal costs climbing while you figure it out.

This is the difference between a partnership that's protected and one that's exposed. When you're aligned and things are going well, you can agree on what's fair without anyone feeling defensive or threatened. You can sort out exit strategies, dispute resolution, how profits are shared, what happens if someone wants out.

Try to impose those same terms later, after things have shifted, and you'll find people have different ideas about what was understood. That's when agreements become expensive. That's when they become disputes.
