Ministerial Direction 119 has added Construction occupations to the priority processing list, after law enforcement and defense occupations.

Onshore healthcare, teaching and construction applications - The third priority applies where the nominee or primary applicant was in Australia when the relevant application was lodged and the occupation is a healthcare, teaching or construction occupation as defined in the Direction.

This direction commenced on 25 July.

Streamlined Visitor Visa application option for Papua New Guineans

Since 1 July 2026, eligible Papua New Guineans have been able to use a new streamlined 'Apply again' online option when applying for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) in either the Business Visitor or Tourist stream to travel to Australia.

The option is available through ImmiAccount to Papua New Guinea citizens who have a history of immigration compliance and who have held a Visitor visa (600) in the Business Visitor or Tourist stream that was finalised within the previous five years.

For all eligible applicants, the 'Apply again' option pre-fills elements of the application form. Some applicants may also benefit from additional application-simplification features and longer visa validity periods. Eligibility is assessed automatically as part of the application process.

1 July visa charge increases have hit hard with increases much higher than the CPI index. Changes include:

Partner visas increased by $2,345 to $11,710.

Resident Return visas increased by $985 to $1,475.

Employer sponsored 186 visas increased by $1,230 to $6,140.

The good news is that the Citizenship charge only increased by $20.

The Migration Legislation Amendment (Arrangements for Work and Holiday Visas - Luxembourg) Instrument 2026 commences on 3 June 2026 and introduces a significant procedural change for Luxembourg passport holders applying for a Subclass 462 (Work and Holiday) visa.

Under the amendment, applicants holding a valid passport issued by Luxembourg will be exempt from the requirement to provide a letter of support from their government when lodging a Subclass 462 visa application.

Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa ballot China, India and Vietnam open

The Department of Home Affairs has advised that registrations for the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa ballot for China, India and Vietnam for the 2026–2027 program year will open on Thursday, 4 June 2026, and will close on Thursday, 25 June 2026.

Individuals seeking to apply for a first Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa in the 2026–2027 program year must register in the ballot for their respective country during the registration period of 4 June to 25 June 2026.
