Temporary travel restrictions for Visitor visa holders with Iranian passports

Temporary travel restrictions are in place for people outside Australia who have a Visitor (Subclass 600) visa linked to their Iranian passport.

An Arrival Control Determination began on 26 March 2026 and is in force for 6 months. If you are:

- outside Australia
- hold a Visitor (Subclass 600) visa, and
- departmental records indicate you provided a passport issued by the Islamic Republic of Iran when you applied for that Visitor visa

Your Visitor visa has temporarily ceased to be in effect as a result of the Determination, unless an exemption applies.

Gabriella moved to Sydney on a Student (subclass 500) visa in 2022. Just before finishing her course, she saw a TikTok from someone claiming to be a “migration adviser” who promised permanent residency in Australia.

She paid them a high fee and trusted them to handle everything, not even checking what visa they had applied for on her behalf.

Gabriella later found out they had applied for a Protection visa – which she wasn’t eligible for – using false claims and documents.

Her application was refused. Now Gabriella faces serious consequences, including a possible fine and up to 10 years in jail, because her visa application included false and misleading information.

Gabriella’s advice?

“Don’t pay anyone for visa help unless they’re a registered migration agent or an Australian legal practitioner – and always know what type of visa you’re applying for.”
