Selling a business? Buyers are already using AI to size you up before you even list.

They're using it to check your online footprint, benchmark your numbers against other businesses in your industry, and spot the risks before they make an offer, working out where they can talk your price down before they even call.

Joanna's joining Mark Rodrigues, Head of SEEK Business, for a free lunchtime webinar on Wednesday 26 August to show you exactly what buyers will see when they look at your business, plus SEEK Business's 2026 market update on where the real opportunity is, straight from their own marketplace data.

Free, 12:30pm to 1:30pm AEST, over lunch.

P.S. We're also running Australia's first survey on how AI is actually being used to buy, sell and run a business. Complete it and leave your email for a personalised AI Benchmark Scorecard, tailored tips on what you could be doing differently, plus early access to the full report before it's public. Buying a business? The smartest buyers I know are already using AI to do the groundwork before they even pick up the phone.

They're using it to find targets, dig into the numbers, and pressure test a deal before they make an offer, spotting the upside in businesses other buyers walk straight past.

I'm joining Mark Rodrigues, Head of SEEK Business, for a free lunchtime webinar on Wednesday 26 August to show you exactly how that's working right now, plus SEEK Business's 2026 market update on where the real opportunity is, straight from their own marketplace data.

Starting our introductions for the year, this is the first of our 3 new senior appointments. Meet Shan Lai, who leads our small business sales and acquisitions.

Shan brings 28 years of M&A and commercial experience across Australia and China, including 15 years in Beijing in major international firms of which the last 6 years as a Corporate and M&A Partner at Bird & Bird, one of the world's leading firms. She has acted on deals of every size, from local business sales to cross-border transactions worth hundreds of millions, on both sides of the table.

She also brings a unique lane: working in language and culture with Chinese buyers and owners here in Australia, businesses that source from China, and businesses selling into China.

And she negotiates a little differently. Shan is completing a Master of Psychology, which she applies to every deal. Understand what each party actually wants, then work the deal from there.

If you are buying, selling, or working between Australia and China, Shan would love to hear from you.

Think the Privacy Act doesn't apply to you because your business turns over under $3 million? That's no longer a safe assumption.

New anti-money-laundering rules have pulled more than 100,000 small businesses into Privacy Act obligations, regardless of size. If you're caught by the new AML reporting requirements, the small business exemption doesn't help you anymore.

The first-time buyers who get burned tend to make the same handful of legal mistakes.

We pulled 5 of the most common ones from Joanna Oakey's book Buy, Grow, Exit - all of them mistakes we still see on real deals. Swipe through. Number 2 involves a building scheduled for demolition that nobody had mentioned.

If you're planning an acquisition, start with the legal groundwork before you fall in love with the deal.

What’s one of the biggest red flags in a business sale?
When the owners aren’t aligned.

In this upcoming episode of The deal room podcast, , Joanna teams up with business brokers Hugo Martin and Travis Latter for part 2 of our insights from the recent AIBB Best Practice Forum (Due Diligence). This time, they talk through why misalignment between founders can derail a deal, sometimes right at the finish line. They also dig into why understanding the "why" behind a business owner's drive to sell can reveal whether they are truly ready for a transaction — or whether there may be hidden risks ahead.

EP 309 Part 2 coming soon.

Our next exclusive referrer AI workshop is on Thursday 19 March, and this one is 100% for advisers navigating their way through AI.

In this session we’ll break down AI agents what they are, how they differ from tools like ChatGPT, and how to actually get AI doing useful work in your day-to-day business.
No theory. No tech demos. Just practical examples.

We’ll cover:
• What AI agents actually are (in plain English)
• The types of tasks AI is good at handling
• How advisers can use AI to reduce admin and repetition
• Real examples of how AI agents are being used right now
• How to set things up so AI works with you (not creating more work)

If you’ve heard people talking about “agents” but aren’t quite sure where they fit yet, this session is designed to close that gap.

Selling a business isn’t just about agreeing on the price.

Before a sale contract can be drafted, there’s a long list of details that need to be confirmed from employees and assets to leases, licences and key contracts.

When this information isn’t gathered upfront, transactions often slow down while everyone tries to fill the gaps.

To make this easier, we’ve created a simple checklist covering the critical information needed to prepare a business sale contract.

It’s designed for both business owners and brokers.

Once the commercial terms are agreed and this information is ready, contracts can often be drafted within 48 hours (assuming you have the right legal team on your side - psst.. That’s us).

👉 Download the checklist here: https://aspectlegal.lpages.co/critical-vendor-information-checklist/

If you’d like a free initial consultation to discuss an upcoming business sale (or you have a client who’d benefit from one), we’d love to help.
