Latest figures available show positive signs.

Total dwellling commencements in Australia rose 7.0% to 52,201 dwellings in the June 2026 quarter - slightly above trend - based on seasonally adjusted data from the ABS. 38.37% of these were new houses.

The number of dwellings commenced more locally in New South Wales is the highest in the recent June 2026 quarter along with September 2025 across data since the March 2023 quarter.

Why property market interest in the space outside the warehouse?

Industrial Outdoor Storage, or IOS, is becoming an institutional asset class in Australia. More than A$1.5 billion of Australian IOS assets has traded since 2023.

Sites with space outside that provides the critical space used to park trucks, stage containers and store the equipment that keeps Australia’s economy moving.

Such sites have always supported logistics and infrastructure activity. Now, limited industrial land and growing occupier demand are bringing IOS firmly into the institutional investment market. Less than one-quarter of industrial-zoned land across Australia’s mainland capitals remains undeveloped and rent levels are affected by site quality.

Logistics remains the largest user of IOS to date, while infrastructure construction and growing online retail activity are increasing demand for equipment storage, fleet parking and operational staging space.

What’s driven latest household wealth?

The figures are in: Total household wealth rose by 1.0% or $201.1 billion in the June quarter 2026 based on latest ABS data.

The driver was strong growth in superannuation assets by 5.2%.

Data showed a 0.2% fall in the value of land and dwellings although value remains 8.0% higher compared to the same period last year.

On the credit side, household demand reached a new record of $72.6 billion. The rise was due to growth in housing loan balances and borrowing by private unincorporated businesses such as sole traders.

Construction industry overview

Construction Operating Profit before tax grew $5.2b (9.0%) xx in 2024-25 based on ABS data. Total selected industries in Australia dropped by -1.9% on this same measure.

There were other positive figures for the Construction sector with Total earning rising $3.8b and employment by 1.3%.

More locally, New South Wales saw an increase in Sales and service income (6.6%, $13.8b) higher than the 4.4% for New South Wales overall.

All things considered for your current situation and longer term goals, what sways your decision to purchasing a house versus other property types, such as apartments, units or townhouses?

PRD cited a survey conducted by Westpac where findings suggested that the proportion of the buyer group first-home buyers intending to buy a house declined from 64% in 2021 to 53% five years later in 2026.

Other property types - apartments, units and townhouses - jumped from 24% to 47%. That’s almost double in the same period.

As a renter, have you thought about doing things to be more sustainable, but not acted yet or want to do more?

Plant a garden: Many landlords will permit you to dig the yard, but if you cannot or are in an apartment, container gardening allows you to move your garden with you.

Similarly, you can compost your food waste. If not permitted in the yard there are benchtop or under-sink options like bokashi bins. Some councils have compost hubs or can connect household food waste to households who actively compost.

In most cases you’ll still be able to use things like draught excluders, window film, rugs and energy efficient appliances or lights in your rental.

Saving Ryde green open space

The City of Ryde Council placed an Interim Heritage Order on TG Millner Fields – which came into effect on 26 August 2026 and is in place for six months – for the 6.2ha land in Marsfield to be protected while Council undertakes the further assessment required to determine the nature and level of the site’s heritage significance.

The Council states the submission of plans to build a 106 dwelling residential development will have minimal impact on Council’s overall housing targets and threatens its longstanding associations with organised rugby, community involvement and local sporting identity.

The Sydney Plan launched since the development proposal clearly identifies Ryde as an area facing a shortage of open space over the next 20 years and the need to create more open spaces.

Anzac Park in West Ryde upgrade announced

Serving as an increasingly important urban oasis in City of Ryde’s population, an upgrade to the central green space Anzac Park in West Ryde has been approved.

Council will manage and deliver construction of the upgrades, with works expected to commence in the first half of 2027.

What will the upgrade involve?
• Upgraded pedestrian and cycle paths
• More seating, shade and gathering spaces
• A new fitness zone
• Improved BBQ facilities
• Better lighting to improve safety
• A modern and accessible amenities building
• Retention of large open grassed areas

Over 300 ideas from the community contributed to these park plans jointly funded with the NSW Government.
