🇳🇿 WHAT’S NEW FOR NEW ZEALAND RESIDENCE OPPORTUNITIES FROM 24 AUGUST?
From 24 August 2026, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will officially implement a range of changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) — one of New Zealand’s key residence pathways for skilled migrants.
✨ Key changes include:
🔹 2 new pathways
👉 Trades and Technician Pathway
👉 Skilled Work Experience Pathway
🔹 Simplified wage threshold 💰
Most applicants will only need to meet one wage threshold, generally based on the rate that applied when they began accumulating skilled work experience.
🔹 Updated qualification requirements 🎓
Points for a Bachelor’s degree will increase from 3 → 4 points.
For the Trades & Technician Pathway, New Zealand qualifications must have at least 120 credits, while relevant overseas qualifications will no longer be subject to the 120-credit requirement.
🔹 Self-employment does not count
Self-employment experience cannot be used to meet the directly relevant work experience requirement under the two new pathways.
🔹 Stronger genuine employment requirements
Job offers must be available and ongoing, with a genuine need for the position to be based in New Zealand.
📌 Please note: Studying or working in New Zealand does not automatically lead to Residence. Applicants must still meet the specific requirements relating to their qualification, occupation, work experience and other eligibility criteria.
