Big Changes for Australian Parent Visas

The Australian Government has now made it possible to lodge Parent Visa applications online, effective 22 April 2026.
This new system applies to the following subclasses:

Subclass 143 – Contributory Parent Visa
Subclass 864 – Aged Contributory Parent Visa
Subclass 103 – Parent Visa
Subclass 804 – Aged Parent Visa

The online system eliminates the need for physical paperwork, reducing the risk of missing or lost documents. It also allows applicants to track the progress of their application in real time, making the process more transparent and less stressful.
Additionally, the system enables timely updates, requests, and notifications from the Department of Home Affairs.

The Subclass 408 Workplace Justice Visa (from 1 July 2024) lets migrant workers who’ve faced exploitation stay in Australia for 6–12 months with full work rights, while they pursue legal remedies — without losing lawful status or being tied to a single employer. To apply, you need a certified “certificate of exploitation” from approved bodies, pass character and health checks, and have or recently held a visa with work rights. This visa promotes fairness, encourages reporting of abuse, and protects vulnerable workers.

South Australia and Queensland have announced major updates to their skilled migration programs for 2025-26.

South Australia: All skilled occupations are now eligible, with offshore access depending on the role.

Queensland: Prioritising engineers, trades, healthcare, and teachers, with Registrations of Interest (ROIs) opening on 19 September 2025 for those listed on the Queensland Skilled Occupation List (QSOL).

These changes highlight Australia’s growing demand for global talent, creating wider PR pathways for professionals — especially from India — across sectors like engineering, healthcare, education, ICT, and trades.

If your visa application in Australia has been refused or cancelled, Section 48 of the Migration Act 1958 might block you from applying for another substantive visa while you’re still in Australia.

Here’s what you should know:

1) It applies when you’re in the migration zone with no substantive visa and your last visa was refused or cancelled under certain rules.

2) Even if you thought you had appeal rights, the bar might still apply.

3) Some visa types are exempt from this bar, like certain protection, partner, or medical treatment visas.

4) Trying to lodge the wrong kind of visa while Section 48 applies could result in the application being invalid, fee loss, or worse immigration consequences.

If you’re unsure where you stand, it’s wise to:

1) Talk with a migration agent
2) Explore exempt visas if applicable
3) Understand your appeal rights

From 13 September 2025, the new Migration (English Language Test Requirements for Subclass 482 Visas) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/082) comes into effect, replacing the 2024 instrument.

What’s new?
1) Wider choice of approved English tests: IELTS (Academic/General), PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, CELPIP General, LanguageCert Academic, and the Michigan English Test.
2) Single Skill Retake (SSR) now recognised – re-sit just one test component if needed.
3) Test results valid for 3 years at time of application.

Exemptions apply if you are:
1) A citizen of the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, or NZ.
2) Completed 5+ years full-time study in English.
3) A licensed professional with equivalent English proof.
4) An intra-company transferee earning AUD $96,400+.
5) In a diplomatic/consular role.

Transition period: Tests taken between 13 Sept 2022 – 12 Sept 2025 remain valid if they meet the required scores.

These reforms aim to broaden choice, increase fairness, and reflect current agreements with test providers.
