Bureaucracy gone mad.

For generations, residents of Meridian Street in Eastlakes have parked partly on the kerb because their street is so narrow.

Bayside Council fined them, then refused to support withdrawing the fines when given the chance to reconsider.

Surely a bit of common sense isn’t too much to ask.

Not everything I do as Leader of the House happens in the parliamentary chamber.

I met with my counterpart, the Hon. Thomas Pa’ataku, Leader of Government Business in Bougainville’s House of Representatives and Minister for Education.

The Bougainville Parliament has a longstanding partnership with the Parliament of NSW, and it was an opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss how our respective parliaments operate.

These relationships are an important part of our parliamentary work with our Pacific neighbours.

I’m horrified by the alleged attack on three patients at one of our local hospitals, Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick.

People go into hospital expecting to be cared for and to feel safe. What happened on Tuesday night is deeply disturbing.

My thoughts are with the patients and their families, and I sincerely hope they all make a full recovery.

I also want to acknowledge the hospital staff who acted so quickly to extinguish the fire. They were confronted with a frightening and dangerous situation, and their swift actions deserve our gratitude and recognition.

I also thank the NSW Police Force for their swift response. A man has now been charged, and the matter is before the courts.

For generations, residents of Charles and Meridian Streets in Eastlakes have parked partly up on the kerb because their streets are so narrow.

Now Bayside Council has decided to fine them for it.

Surely there’s a better way than introducing complicated traffic arrangements in two short streets used almost entirely by the people who live there.

It’s time for some common sense.
