We were proud to support the Coota Girls Aboriginal Corporation Sorry Day Community Gathering again this year. It was a powerful day of music, reflection, connection and honouring the survivors of the Stolen Generations and their families and communities.

The policies and practices of the Stolen Generations continue to impact First Nations peoples today. As we come to the end of Reconciliation Week we reaffirm our committed to the ongoing work of healing and truth-telling.

Tonight, on Four Corners an investigation into police misconduct within the NSW Police Force.

From our work in police accountability, we know that NSW Police systematically use excessive force and that the complaints process lacks transparency.

Last financial year alone, NSW Police paid out $40 million in settlements and legal costs to people who sued over alleged officer misconduct.

NSW Police dodge accountability through internal investigations and confidential settlements.

Reform of the complaints process emphasising transparency, accountability, and independence is vital.

Each May, we mark Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence. One aspect of DFV that can be hard to identify is financial abuse.
Financial abuse is a form of domestic and family violence where a partner or ex-partner uses money to control you. This includes limiting your access to money or creating debts in your name.
Our Financial Abuse Service can help with things like:
If your partner or ex-partner is hiding money or other assets, or not paying child support

Our case work shows police often use Tasers not as a last resort in a hostile situation, but rather as a routine enforcement tool. NSW Police must face greater scrutiny and oversight on this issue.

The NSW Government cannot suspend the democratic right of the community to protest.
