From 2 October 2026, new rules change who can lodge and be granted a Student visa (subclass 500) or Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) while in Australia.
Key changes include:
๐น Most temporary visa holders can no longer lodge a Student or Student Guardian visa application while in Australia.
๐น Current Student visa holders applying for another Student visa are also affected unless they meet an exemption.
๐น If no exemption applies, the applicant must be outside Australia when the application is lodged and when the visa is granted.
๐น Student visa applicants can generally no longer include a partner or dependent children unless an exemption applies.
๐น Current Student visa holders can no longer add family members as subsequent entrants after their visa has been granted, and there are no exemptions to this rule.
๐น Applications lodged before 2 October 2026, including applications containing family members, will continue to be assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged.
Importantly, these changes do not affect your current Student visa.
