Minister Burke’s National Press Club announcement has been widely framed as a crackdown on migration. For employers, I think the more important story is how the Government is trying to balance lower Net Overseas Migration with Australia’s ongoing skills shortages, housing pressure, regional labour needs and an ageing workforce.

The package tightens parts of the Student, Visitor and Working Holiday Maker programs, but at the same time introduces new skilled visa processing priorities under MD121 and MD122, with Priority 1 treatment for sectors including Healthcare, Construction, Defence, Resources and Agriculture.

For employers, the practical implications are significant:
- greater value in skilled workers already in Australia
- more 482 transfers and Graduate-to-skilled pathways
- stronger competition for onshore talent
- faster processing potential in priority sectors
- a thinner future pipeline from Students and WHMs

We’ve put together a detailed employer-focused analysis looking at what this means across Engineering, Healthcare, Construction Trades, Defence, Agriculture, Resources, Automotive, General Trades, Scientific & Technical and IT.

Australia’s temporary visa population represents a significant part of the potential workforce — but the headline number does not tell the whole story.

As at 30 June 2026, there were approximately 2.81 million temporary visa holders in Australia. Of these, around 2.08 million were in visa categories that generally carry full or partial work rights.

For employers, the important point is not simply how many temporary visa holders are in Australia. It is understanding:
• which visa holders have permission to work
• what restrictions may apply to their employment
• whether their skills align with genuine workforce shortages
• when employer sponsorship may provide a longer-term pathway
• the importance of checking individual visa conditions through VEVO

Temporary skilled workers, graduates, students, Working Holiday Makers and New Zealand citizens can all form part of Australia’s labour market — but their work rights and long-term options differ considerably.

For employers facing persistent skills shortages, understanding the available talent pool and the relevant migration pathways can be an important part of workforce planning.

Australia’s 2026 Visitor visa changes could significantly affect people planning to lodge a Partner visa after arriving in Australia.

The Government has announced that a No Further Stay provision will apply more broadly to future Visitor visa grants. For prospective Partner visa applicants, that means the conditions attached to a Visitor visa could determine whether an onshore subclass 820 application is available.

Key issues include Condition 8503, waiver requirements, Bridging Visa eligibility, and whether an onshore or offshore Partner visa strategy is appropriate.

Our latest article explains what has changed, what has not, and why visa strategy should be considered before travelling to Australia.

What Australia's June 2026 Skilled Visa Invitations Mean for Employers

Australia's latest SkillSelect invitation round has generated significant interest among skilled migrants, but there is another story that deserves just as much attention.

For Australian employers, the latest 10,000 invitations issued under the Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) visa provide valuable insight into where Australia's skills shortages continue to exist and which occupations remain critical to our economy.

Rather than simply being migration news, the June 2026 invitation round is another indicator of where employers are likely to continue experiencing recruitment challenges over the coming years.

For businesses operating in engineering, healthcare, automotive, scientific, technical and skilled agricultural industries, the message is clear: competition for skilled people is unlikely to ease anytime soon.
