💭This October, we're celebrating Mental Health Month in NSW.

Most people will struggle with their mental health at some point in their lives. This year’s theme reminds us that even a moment of connection can make a meaningful difference.

Many people living with mental illness have experienced stigma and discrimination. These experiences make it harder for people to feel included in their workplace or community.

If you have experienced discrimination because of a mental health condition, speaking with a lawyer can help you understand your rights and decide what to do next.

🪻On Wednesday, KLC visited the Jacaranda Women’s Hub to talk about scams with the Indonesian Women's Association.

Our Community Legal Education Lawyer Nikola and KLC students Deena and Lillian talked about common scams, how to spot them, how to prevent them, and where to report them.

We discussed romance scams, 'hi mum/hi dad' scams, scams that impersonate government agencies, and the need to 🛑STOP, ✅CHECK, and 🔒PROTECT.

Today, we farewell Ganesh Chandrasekaran and welcome Chun Yu as our new Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer secondee!

For over twenty years, HSFK has been sending lawyers to Kingsford Legal Centre to be a part of our team delivering free legal advice to our community.

In his six months at KLC, Ganesh achieved some incredible outcomes for his clients, who gave beautiful and heartfelt feedback about the difference he made.

Farewell, Ganesh! And we are so excited to have Chun on board at KLC!

Yesterday was the 19th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

UNDRIP says that First Peoples have fundamental human rights to self-determination, culture and language, Country, participation in decision-making, and equality and non-discrimination.

These distinct rights are linked to other human rights. At KLC, we work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients who are fighting for their human rights to adequate housing, access to health services, protection of the family, and non-discrimination.

Australia endorsed UNDRIP in 2009, but has not incorporated it into domestic law.

It’s time for the NSW Government to implement UNDRIP, including by introducing a that recognises the distinct rights of First Peoples. To do this, the Government must listen closely to First Nations communities.

Human rights are not optional. Australia must uphold, protect, and respect the rights of First Peoples.

KLC lawyers Naomi and Joe were pleased to attend the Legal Aid NSW Civil Law Conference last week.

The conference provided valuable insights from leading practitioners and experts on significant legal issues, including social housing tenancy terminations, police interactions, disability rights and housing accessibility, and misidentification in domestic and family violence cases.

A strong theme throughout the conference was the importance of collaboration across the legal and community sectors to improve outcomes for clients and ensure access to effective, holistic support.

Every UNSW Sydney law student comes to Kingsford Legal Centre at least once during their studies.

Our students work directly with clients as they are challenged and supported to develop practical legal skills.

We are proud to be a part of Lester Fernandez SC's story. He says:

This year, as we celebrate 45 years of Kingsford Legal Centre UNSW, we're proud to spotlight Law & Justice alumni whose time at KLC helped shape their career paths, inspiring a lifelong commitment to justice, advocacy and community service.

⭐️ Meet Lester Fernandez SC

Graduating with a Bachelor of Laws and returning ten years later to complete his Master of Laws, Lester Fernandez SC credits much of his professional direction to experiences beyond the classroom, particularly his time at KLC. Those experiences sparked a passion for advocacy and access to justice, leading him to a children's legal service, Legal Aid NSW, and ultimately to the Bar.

Now a Senior Counsel, Lester attributes much of his growth to exceptional colleagues and clients, noting their shared attribute of treating everyone with equal respect and courtesy.

His advice for today's students? "Be open to the many surprises life offers. Follow your passion. And whatever it is that you do, make sure you do something which will help those in our society who have not had the advantages you have had."
