If this were a movie plot, you’d call it ridiculous.

In 1926, a 73‑year‑old architect in worn clothes is hit by a tram in Barcelona. Mistaken for a vagrant, he’s taken to a pauper’s hospital. He dies three days later.

His name was Antoni Gaudí.

The Sagrada Família is less than 25% complete. His workshop is full of plaster models and drawings showing how to finish it.

Ten years later, in 1936, anarchists break in. They smash the models. Burn the drawings. Even pry open Gaudí’s tomb. For the next fifty years, architects rebuild his design logic from photographs and rubble.

The real challenge was geometry. Gaudí used hanging‑chain models because the maths for his hyperbolic forms didn’t exist yet. He solved it physically. Computers only caught up in the 1980s. By 2015, stonework that once took months to carve was being digitally modelled and machine‑cut in days.

And the funding? No government. No Vatican. Just tourists paying to see scaffolding. €134.5 million in 2025. Nearly five million visitors a year buying €26 tickets to watch a cathedral under construction. The unfinished state became the attraction.

Now the twist.

Next month—100 years after Gaudí’s death—the cross will be raised on the Tower of Jesus Christ. Height: 172.5 metres. The tallest church building on Earth. A project 144 years in the making.

When asked why it was taking so long, Gaudí had said: “My client is not in a hurry.”

Turns out he meant it.

Building New Isn’t the Whole Solution!

The National Housing Accord sets a target of 1.2 million new dwellings over five years. But experts at the 2025 National Housing Conference ask: will this really improve affordability, quality, and security—or just widen the gap between the haves and have-nots?

Will building more houses fix Australia's housing crisis?

Under the National Housing Accord, all state and territorry governments have agreed to support a target of building 1.2 million new, well-located dwellings within five years.

But will that increase housing affordability, availability, quality, security of tenure, and the growing gap between the haves and have-nots?

Big Ideas host Natasha Mitchell heard from experts at the 2025 National Housing Conference to learn more.

Monopy, the Landlords’ Game

Monopoly was originally designed in 1903, by Lizzie Magie, a charismatic feminist, actor, and poet. Magie called her creation the Landlord’s Game, basing it on the theories of Henry George, an influential economist who argued that the value of land should be shared by the people rather than extracted by property owners. How did a game meant to critique capitalism come to embody it?

"If you're keen on the idea of a passive house but don't have the cash to go all-out, he recommends looking into the "high-performance" home instead.

"This is a term used to describe a home with a higher level of insulation, glazing and cladding than a [traditional one], so it's going to be a lot more comfortable, without the larger financial pressures," Moody explains.

It's not all about the big changes, though. When combined with other adjustments, fellow Melbourne-based architect Imogen Pullar suggests smaller tweaks can have a significant impact — such as getting out the caulking gun and filling in gaps and cracks."

Homelessness in Australia isn’t hidden anymore. It’s right in front of us—on busy city corners, in quiet country towns, and in the lives of people we pass every day. Rising rents, limited support, and cracks in the system are pushing more people out of stable housing. And behind every person sleeping rough or couch surfing is a story. Not just of hardship, but of resilience. Of trying to hold on. Of being let down.

This crisis isn’t just about numbers—it’s about people. About dignity, safety, and the basic human need to belong somewhere. Right now, more than 122,000 Australians are without a secure place to live. That includes families with children, young people aging out of care, and elders who never imagined they'd be here.

The reasons are complex—housing affordability, domestic violence, mental health gaps—but the result is heartbreakingly simple: too many people with nowhere to go.

We need to look closer. Listen deeper. Respond with care, not judgment. Because silence isn’t neutral—it’s part of the problem. What’s needed now is empathy. Advocacy. And the courage to demand better.

Sustainability Isn’t a Trend—It’s a Standard 🌱

As conscious living reshapes consumer expectations, even luxury brands are rethinking how they show up in the world.

Repurposing recycled shipping containers for pop-up stores isn’t just clever—it’s a meaningful shift toward circular design, reduced waste, and modular efficiency.

For brands like Louis Vuitton, this approach offers more than aesthetic appeal. It’s a chance to align high-end experiences with low-impact principles, proving that luxury can be both aspirational and accountable.

These pop-ups become more than retail spaces—they’re statements of intent, inviting consumers into a lifestyle where elegance and ethics coexist.
