Low Range Drink Driving in NSW: Can You Lose Your Licence?

Many people are surprised to learn that even a low range drink driving offence in NSW can result in an immediate licence suspension.

For many first offences, police may issue a penalty notice and suspend your licence for 3 months, meaning you may lose your licence without first going to court.

Recovering these debts requires a strategic approach, including issuing demand letters, negotiating payment plans, and, if necessary, pursuing court action. Understanding the legal process can help you recover debts efficiently while maintaining professional relationships.

Debt recovery begins with clear communication and documentation. Sending a formal demand letter is often the first step, outlining the amount owed and the consequences of non-payment.

The consequences may include interest accruing on the amount owed and paying additional amounts for legal or enforcement costs. If this does not resolve the issue, legal proceedings may be necessary.

If the debtor is a company and does not dispute the debt, the issue of a Creditor’s Statutory Demand may also be a suitable approach to enforce payment.

1. Who gets the family home?
“There’s no automatic rule and all of the family’s financial circumstances must be considered. The law considers a range of factors including financial contributions, non-financial contributions and each person’s current and future circumstances.”

2. Do we have to go to court?
“No. Most family law matters are resolved through negotiation or mediation without the need for disputed court proceedings.”

3. How are parenting arrangements decided?
“The law focuses on the best interests of the child as the most important consideration, and requires consideration of other factors including their safety, their needs and the benefits of maintaining meaningful relationships with both parents.”

Double demerits are now in force

Drivers in NSW and ACT should take extra care on the roads over the upcoming long weekends.

Double demerits apply:

• Easter long weekend: 2 April – 6 April 2026
• ANZAC Day long weekend: 24 April – 27 April 2026

During these periods, offences such as speeding, mobile phone use, not wearing a seatbelt, and riding without a helmet attract double the usual demerit points.

It’s a timely reminder to slow down, stay focused, and prioritise safety, for yourself and everyone on the road.

Discrimination claims are rising – Is your business prepared?

Employment discrimination claims can arise when an employee believes they have been treated unfairly because of characteristics such as race, gender, age, disability, or other protected attributes.

What can employers do to protect themselves?
For employers, having clear workplace policies, providing training, and responding promptly to complaints are important steps in reducing the risk of discrimination claims.

In Australia, discrimination complaints may be made to the Australian Human Rights Commission, and in some circumstances, employees may also bring a general protections claim through the Fair Work Commission. There are strict time limits that apply to these claims, and disputes are often first addressed through conciliation before court proceedings may be considered.
