SCLS proudly attended the Aunty Betty Memorial Reconciliation Walk, recognising the importance of reconciliation and strengthening community connections.

It was wonderful to connect with our partner services, share information about our referral pathways, and learn about other support services available within the community.

National Reconciliation Week provides an important opportunity to reflect on our shared history, celebrate the cultures and contributions of our First Nation peoples, and strengthen our commitment to building respectful relationships and a more inclusive future for all Australians.

This National Volunteer Week, we want to thank the 1000’s of volunteer lawyers – and our Sunshine Coast law firms – who have supported SCLS for over 42 years. Our volunteers continue to give their time, expertise and compassion to people facing some of life’s most difficult moments.

This video is a tribute to the extraordinary people who have helped shape Suncoast Community Legal Service over the past four decades – and who continue to make our community stronger, safer and more connected every day.

To every volunteer who has been part of that journey: thank you.

You are the heart of this service.

Every dollar counts in our mission to provide free legal services to vulnerable and disadvantaged residents of the Sunshine Coast.

Right now, you can double your donation — and double your impact — through a matched giving program supporting Suncoast Community Legal Service.

Every dollar you donate will be matched, up to $5000, helping to fund vital legal support for people in our community who need it most. From navigating family law issues to accessing critical advice in times of crisis, community lawyers are often the difference between vulnerability and empowerment.

Matched giving isn’t just about numbers — it’s about amplifying access to justice.

If you’ve been thinking about making a tax deductible donation before EOFY, there’s never been a better time to act. Your support today goes twice as far in helping ensure that no vulnerable person is left without the legal help they deserve.

Dear colleagues and friends,

We have made the difficult decision to cancel tomorrow's Queensland Legal Walk due to rainy weather.

While we could hold out hope for some relief from the rain, it looks very unlikely, and we need to ensure the safety of everyone participating and volunteering. Although walks in Brisbane and the south-east are cancelled, it is likely that Walks in Cairns and Townsville will proceed.

Unfortunately, we are unable to reschedule the cancelled events due to Council permit requirements and approvals.

While we are very sad to miss seeing everyone in person to celebrate Law Week and National Pro Bono Day, the most important impact of the Walk is the difference your fundraising makes.

Thanks to the Walk, each year we can provide legal help to more people in need. Your fundraising also helps pro bono clients with out-of-pocket costs. This can include helping clients pay for medical reports or transcripts needed to progress their case or helping out with practical needs such as a grocery voucher.

Recently a client told us that financial support from LawRight was the reason she could leave a violent relationship and establish a new home with her kids. That is all thanks to you. You can still donate at www.qldlegalwalk.org.au.

We will also ensure the breakfast goodies are delivered to one of our Homelessness Law partners, so they don't go to waste.

Thank you for your understanding.

LawRight team

SCLS out and about in our community

We attended the Landsborough Memorial Town Hall session with Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace MP.

As the Sunshine Coast's community legal service working on the frontline in the Fisher electorate for more than 42 years, SCLS provides fortnightly outreach legal advice to some of our most vulnerable and disadvantaged community members across the Sunshine Coast. Our regular outreach locations include Beerwah Library, Caloundra Community Centre and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

It was a valuable opportunity to hear directly from community members and reflect on the issues being raised — particularly veterans’ support and mental health.

These are areas of significant legal need that we regularly see in our work, including providing legal advice to veterans and undertaking Mental Health Review Tribunal matters.

We remain committed to being present in our community, listening, and supporting access to justice.

We’re excited to welcome -Star Dwyer from the University of the Sunshine Coast 🎉

Ruby first connected with us through the LAW423 program, where students observe real client advice sessions. Inspired by the impact of community legal work, she has now joined us as a volunteer - a great example of how early exposure can shape future legal careers.

Now in her first week, we’re thrilled to have Ruby on board, supported by Maddison Holden, who coordinates our volunteer program. As Ruby shared, “I can already tell I am going to learn so much from this opportunity” - a reflection of the hands-on experience these placements provide.

At SCLS, our student volunteer program plays an important role in both supporting service delivery and building the next generation of community-minded legal professionals. With demand for frontline legal support continuing to grow, programs like this are critical to strengthening access to justice across the Sunshine Coast.

We’re incredibly proud of our student volunteers - Bryan Bader Groeneweg Parker Stowers Callaghan Fillipi - who play an integral role in keeping our services running smoothly.

If you’re a law student interested in gaining hands-on experience while making a real difference in your community, we’d love to hear from you.

📹In the news this week:

The Fair Work Commission has ruled to phase out junior pay rates for 18–20-year-olds in retail, fast food, and pharmacy, meaning young workers will gradually move to full adult wages by 2029. The change, set to begin in December, could benefit around 500,000 workers and is being hailed as a major step toward fairer pay, while junior rates will still apply to younger teens.

Need help understanding your pay or workplace rights? We offer free legal advice for young adults, get in touch:
