✔️ Separate, independent legal advice for the surrogate and the intended parents
✔️ Counselling before the arrangement begins
✔️ A written surrogacy agreement signed before conception
✔️ A parentage order from the Children’s Court after the birth

It's been 12 months since the Family Law Amendment Act 2024 changed how Australian courts handle property settlements. So - what's actually different in practice?

Our Senior Associate Joanne Bragg has reviewed a year's worth of court decisions to answer that question. She found that while claims for "add-backs" on wasted assets have effectively disappeared from the courts' approach, and family violence is now formally considered when dividing property, the actual outcomes in most cases would likely have been similar under the old law.

We're delighted to share that Jessica Popple has re-committed to the SCLA Committee for another term. Jessica has given so much to the association over the years, including serving as President, and her energy for supporting local practitioners hasn't dimmed one bit. The Sunshine Coast legal community is lucky to have her.

The AGM also marked the end of an era, with our very own Pippa Colman stepping away from the committee. Pippa has been part of the SCLA for longer than most of us can remember, including her own time as President, and her contribution to the association and to our local profession has been extraordinary. From mentoring young lawyers to showing up, year after year, for the events that bring our community together – thank you, Pippa.

Congratulations to the incoming executive – President Callum Lee, Vice-President Kylie Anderson, Secretary Michelle Close and Treasurer Alicia Lucas, and to all returning and new committee members.
