Domestic Violence Remembrance Day

Today, we hold space for the lives stolen by domestic and family violence.

Not just the stories we can name, but the ones that never reached the public record.

We remember the people whose deaths were:

🙇‍♀️Visible
🙇‍♀️Silenced
🙇‍♀️Misclassified
🙇‍♀️Forgotten

We remember those who died instantly, and those who died slowly from strangulation injuries, untreated trauma, brain damage, or years of cumulative harm.

We remember those whose deaths were called “accidents”.

Those who vanished without answers.

Those who could not survive the violence any longer.

The truth is far greater and far more devastating than the phrase “one death a week” will ever capture.

Today is not just remembrance.

It is a call to conscience.

A call to action.

A call to truth.

Together, we must

A very well deserved shout out:
https://vt.tiktok.com/ZS9RyJ8Ls/

Every now and then, we see a moment online that cuts through the noise, a perpetrator demonstrating real, grounded remorse for the harm they’ve caused.

Not excuses. Not minimisation. Not performative apologies.

Actual accountability.

For victim‑survivors, remorse is not about words. It’s about a perpetrator recognising the pattern of their behaviour, naming the impact, and committing to change in a way that is consistent, transparent, and verifiable.

When someone steps up and owns their actions, it matters. It shows what is possible when responsibility replaces denial, when insight replaces defensiveness, and when accountability becomes the starting point, not the end point.

At DV LAWYER, we advocate fiercely for victim‑survivors, and we also recognise the importance of genuine behavioural change. Remorse alone is never enough, but it is a critical first step in breaking the cycle of coercive control and violence.

To those doing the real work, not the performative kind, your accountability contributes to safer futures for everyone.

What happens when a room is filled with 633 women who refuse to accept the status quo?
Momentum. Courage. Change.

Yesterday’s WomenofInfluence’s International Women’s Day event by Georgia Lane and the WOI committee brought together an extraordinary group of women who are leading businesses, shaping policy, driving innovation and advocating for change.

From boardrooms to courtrooms, from community advocacy to industry innovation, the women in that room are driving conversations that matter and creating pathways for those who will follow.

Every day I work with women rebuilding their lives after violence, coercive control and fear.

So when I stand in a room filled with powerful, courageous women supporting one another, it is a powerful reminder of why this work matters.

DV LAWYER is incredibly proud to be a long running Platinum Sponsor of an event that does more than celebrate women’s achievements. It creates space for collaboration, leadership and meaningful progress.

International Women’s Day is not just about celebration.

It is about responsibility.

Responsibility to continue breaking down barriers.
Responsibility to elevate women’s voices where decisions are made.
Responsibility to ensure the next generation of women grow up in a world that is safer, fairer and full of possibility.

Standing alongside so many inspiring women was a reminder of something powerful:

When women support women, extraordinary change happens.

And the work continues.

This week I had the privilege of speaking as a Guest Lecturer to Bond University’s final‑year Advanced Criminal Law students on “Shifting Incident‑Based Responses to Pattern‑Based Recognition of Coercive Control.”

As Queensland continues its transition toward a legal framework that recognises coercive control as a course of conduct, it’s critical that our emerging lawyers understand how to identify patterns, map behaviours over time, and apply the legislative elements with clarity and confidence.

These students will soon be the prosecutors, defence lawyers, magistrates and policy leaders shaping the next decade of domestic and family violence law.

Their engagement and insight were exceptional, and it’s encouraging to see such depth of commitment to improving safety and justice outcomes.

Grateful to Bond University for the invitation and for prioritising this essential area of legal education.

Thank you to the Gold Coast Bulletin for putting a spotlight on exposing a form of abuse that is often overlooked but impacts so many: .

Financial abuse - Safety without financial stability is not freedom, it’s survival.

People often think domestic violence is only physical. But in almost every case we see, there’s financial abuse - controlling money, hiding assets, cutting off access to accounts, or leaving someone with debts they didn’t even know existed. It is subtle, but devastating. And most women don’t realise it’s happening until they’re already deep in it.

At DV LAWYER, our team specialises in uncovering that abuse and dismantling it.

My twin sister Kerrie Simpson and I work side by side every day, me on the law advocating to promote safety, protection and accountability, Kerrie on the numbers, to deliver outcomes that are just, strategic, and survivor-focused in domestic violence protection orders, parenting and property settlement matters.
