Jane Garber-Rosenzweig is the founder of Gable Lawyers. Jane has 20 years' experience in all aspects of business law, franchising, leasing and intellectual property, including:

Great vibe this morning and another great meeting! Thank you to all members and guests for attending.
Nadya Voloshina from Respect Wills & Estates ran a thought-provoking exercise of what we would stop doing if we started our businesses today. Then Alla Sandler from GNA Property provided a very clear picture of the current property market and how she, as a buyer’s advocate, works with her clients and achieves great results. If you are looking to buy a property, definitely speak with Alla.

The OAIC’s updated guidance highlights the high compliance threshold that applies when collecting biometric information and using facial recognition technology in retail environments.

Businesses considering FRT need to think carefully about necessity, proportionality, consent, notification and privacy governance before implementation.

Great turnout this morning and another great meeting! Thank you to all members and guests for attending.

Brin Hayden from Cabbage Capital educated us on Insurance Premium Finance and Manali Mirani from Insurance Pathways presented on “What Happens if Life Doesn’t Go to Plan?”. Very insightful as most people think their personal insurances in their super cover them fully, which in most cases many things are not covered or not adequately covered.

Our next meeting will be on the 4th of September, with very knowledgeable buyer’s advocate Alla Sandler from GNA Property will be presenting.

Registered business name is NOT the same as owning a trademark.

This week’s dispute between Brisbane’s “Barbecue Mafia” and a Sydney food truck trading as “BBQ Mafia” at the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) is a useful reminder for small business owners.

Barbecue Mafia held a registered trademark since November 2017. The food truck operator is reported to have registered “BBQ Mafia” as a business name only in June 2026. Customers reportedly confused the two at the Ekka, and Barbecue Mafia says it is now considering its legal options.

Here is the distinction that trips a lot of business owners up. Registering a business name with ASIC does not give you any exclusive right to use that name: it simply lets you trade under it. A registered trademark is different. In the classes it covers, it gives the owner exclusive rights to use that brand and, depending on the circumstances, a basis to take action against others using a confusingly similar name.

If you have registered a business name and assumed that means your brand is protected, it is worth checking. A trademark search and registration is a straightforward step worth taking early and it can save a much bigger headache later.
