🇦🇺 Important Student Visa Update

New rules have changed who can apply for a Student visa (subclass 500) while in Australia.

Key changes include:
• Student visa holders applying for a further Student visa as the primary applicant must now apply from outside Australia.
• Eligible secondary applicants must apply at the same time and place as the primary applicant and lodge a combined application. This means subsequent entrants can no longer be added after the Student visa has been granted.
• The previous 28-day pathway for certain former Student visa holders to apply onshore has been removed, subject to limited exceptions.
• More temporary visa holders are now required to apply offshore for a Student visa, including holders of subclasses 400, 407, 408, 417, 457, 462 and 482.

These changes may affect your options if you are currently in Australia and planning to apply for a Student visa.

🇦🇺 Good news for Australian visa applicants!

From 1 October 2026, the Department of Home Affairs has ceased charging card payment surcharges when paying Visa Application Charges.

This means applicants will no longer pay the additional card surcharge when making their visa payment.

Importantly, this change does not increase the Visa Application Charge (VAC) itself.

Australia has announced more visa changes 🇦🇺 Here’s what’s on the agenda:

- Student & graduate visas: restrictions on adding family members, with exceptions for Pacific and ASEAN nationals and certain courses, including PhDs.
- Visitor visas: a “No Further Stay” condition on future grants, limiting applications for most other visas while in Australia.
- Skilled visas: a revised points test giving greater weight to housing and construction trades.
- Compliance: stronger action on visa overstayers and migration agents who knowingly support applications without merit.

The announcement protects existing onshore family arrangements under the student changes and visitors already in Australia under the visitor changes. Start dates and detailed rules still need to be checked before making plans.

If you need a Bridging Visa B (BVB), the Department recommends applying at least 4 weeks before you travel.

Leaving it until the last few days could mean missing your flight while waiting for approval. Allow extra time 4 weeks isn’t a guaranteed turnaround.
