When family violence makes headlines, the conversation matters.

Recent headlines involving prominent public figures have once again brought domestic and family violence into the national conversation.

While individual allegations must be dealt with through the appropriate legal processes, these moments also provide an opportunity to reflect on how we, as a community, talk about family violence.

Too often, public discussions focus on the reputation of the person accused, their public image, or whether the allegations align with what people believe they know about them.

But family violence does not discriminate based on wealth, status, profession or public profile.

At Medson Legal, our work supporting victim-survivors reminds us that family violence is often complex, deeply personal and not always visible to those outside a relationship.

The language we use matters. The assumptions we make matter. And the way we respond when someone shares their experience matters.

We can respect the presumption of innocence while also recognising the importance of listening to victim-survivors, challenging harmful stereotypes and encouraging informed, respectful conversations.

Because awareness shouldn’t end when the headlines move on.

Separated a long time ago but never sorted out your property?

It’s not uncommon for couples to separate and move on with their lives without formally finalising their financial affairs.

However, there are important time limits to be aware of:

⏰ If you were married, you generally have 12 months from the date your divorce becomes final to commence property settlement proceedings.

⏰ If you were in a de facto relationship, you generally have 2 years from the date of separation to commence property settlement proceedings.

If these time limits have already passed, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have no options. In some circumstances, the Court may grant permission to commence proceedings out of time.

If you separated some time ago and still have property, superannuation, debts or other financial matters that were never formally resolved, it’s worth obtaining advice about your options.

Amy joined Medson Legal with a wealth of professional experience, having spent several years working in human resources, where she managed complex and sensitive employee relations matters and provided practical advice and guidance to leaders.

That experience has given Amy a strong understanding of people and the challenges that can arise during difficult periods in their lives, qualities she now brings to her legal practice.

Amy completed her Juris Doctor in 2025 and Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice through Leo Cussen in 2026, culminating in her admission as a solicitor this week.

Meet Agata – Lawyer.

Agata brings a diverse range of legal experience to the team, with a background spanning family law, criminal law, immigration, professional standards and contracts.

During her studies, Agata worked as a paralegal across several areas of law and as a Legal Case Manager at the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia in Sydney, gaining valuable insight into the management of family law matters.

Following her admission, Agata worked as a Criminal Lawyer with the ACT Legal Aid Commission, where she developed significant advocacy and courtroom experience.

Agata brings this broad experience to her practice, together with a commitment to providing thoughtful, practical and considered advice to her clients.

AI is changing the way lawyers work — but should you trust AI with your legal matter?

Artificial intelligence can be an incredibly useful tool for lawyers. It can help with research, summarising documents, identifying issues and improving efficiency.

But there is an important distinction between using AI to assist a lawyer and using AI instead of a lawyer.

AI can produce an answer that sounds confident and convincing — and still be wrong.

It may:

⚠️ Misinterpret legislation or case law
⚠️ Rely on outdated information
⚠️ Miss important facts or nuances in your circumstances
⚠️ “Hallucinate” cases or legal authorities that don’t exist
⚠️ Fail to identify an important legal issue
⚠️ Create privacy and confidentiality risks when sensitive information is entered into an AI system

For clients, this is particularly important.

If you are using ChatGPT or another AI tool to understand your legal situation, treat the information as a starting point — not legal advice.

And be very careful about entering confidential information, personal details, court documents or other sensitive material into an AI platform.

At Medson Legal, technology can assist us in working efficiently — but the responsibility for your legal matter remains with your lawyer.

Your circumstances are unique. Your legal advice should be too.

Think AI has the answer? It’s still worth asking a lawyer.

Think before you post- it could end up in court.

Going through a separation? Your social media activity may be more relevant to your family law matter than you think.

Screenshots, messages, photos, comments and posts can all potentially become relevant evidence in parenting and property proceedings.

Before you post about:
❌ Your ex-partner
❌ Your children or parenting arrangements
❌ Your relationship breakdown
❌ Your finances or lifestyle
❌ Your family law matter

…pause and think about how that post could look if it was later shown to a lawyer, mediator or Judge.

Our tip: If you’re involved in a family law dispute, assume that anything you put online could be seen by the other side.

When in doubt, don’t post it.
