At M+E, our approach begins with understanding the business.

The people, the industry, the commercial objectives and the pressures shaping each decision. Our team works across industries including agribusiness, thoroughbred, food production, heavy industry, professional services and education.

Different industries. Different challenges. One shared focus: practical legal thinking that supports commercial outcomes.

Because good legal advice should make the path forward clearer.

Signing a business contract? Don't skip these 5 questions.

✔️ Are the deliverables clear?
✔️ Are the payment terms fair?
✔️ Who carries the risk?
✔️ Can you exit the agreement?
✔️ What happens if there's a dispute?

A little clarity upfront can prevent costly surprises later.

Save this checklist before your next contract review.

Grain-fed feedlotting is at record levels in Australia and is only projected to grow. With many of our clients are either establishing new feedlot facilities on-farm or expanding their existing feedlotting operations, last week, Daniel Morgan, Isabel White and Lydia Munro headed to the Gold Coast to attend Beef Ex.

Unsurprisingly, this year’s event was the biggest yet, bringing together an impressive line-up of speakers for a two-day conference alongside a broad range of exhibitors from across the industry. A huge thank you to .alfa for hosting.

It was a fantastic opportunity to hear from the best in the business, gain valuable industry insights and stay abreast of the latest developments shaping the sector.

Industry knowledge is what sets our team apart, and we look forward to supporting our feedlotting clients through this exciting and progressive period in the industry!

Commercial relationships change.

Volumes increase. Responsibilities shift. Pricing changes. What was once a small supplier or customer can become critical to the business.

The contract governing that relationship doesn't always change with it.

Reviewing important agreements isn't simply about checking whether they're legally sound. It's about asking whether they still reflect the commercial relationship they are meant to support.

If the relationship has changed, it may be time to ask whether the agreement should too. Speak with M+E about reviewing your key commercial agreements.

Food production is changing, and the regulatory landscape is changing with it.

From cell-cultured ingredients to new forms of novel food, innovation is creating opportunities that didn't exist for producers a generation ago.

It also means regulatory requirements, commercial agreements and product strategy need to be considered earlier in the development process.

For food businesses investing in what's next, commercial readiness needs to keep pace with innovation.

Industry understanding changes the advice.

Because good advice starts with understanding the business behind the matter. How it operates. Where the pressure sits. What the commercial objective is.

At M+E, we look beyond the legal issue to understand the bigger commercial picture.

Strong industry numbers don’t always reflect conditions on the ground.

Australian agricultural production remains near record levels, while average broadacre farm profits are forecast to fall. When margins tighten, financing, contracts, cashflow and risk allocation all deserve closer attention.

For agribusiness, resilience matters just as much as growth.

At M+E, we help businesses navigate change with clear, commercially focused legal strategies. Get in touch with our team to discuss how we can support your business.

Racing Australia has recently announced a one off process that may allow certain owners affected by late Foal Ownership Declarations (FODs) to have racing embargoes lifted following an unsuccessful appeal. This development highlights the importance of breeders and owners understanding their obligations, complying with applicable deadlines, and ensuring ownership documentation is accurately maintained.

The process applies only to horses born in the 2025 season or earlier. To be eligible for the embargo, owners must:

✓ Lodge their FOD by 9 October 2026 (if not already lodged);
✓ Lodge an appeal by 13 November 2026; and
✓ If the appeal is unsuccessful, then elect to pay the $2,500 fee within 30 days of the decision.

Upon payment of the fee, the racing embargo will be removed, and the horse will be eligible to race.

We advise owners and breeders with outstanding FODs to review their position promptly and ensure the relevant deadlines are met to access the embargo.

Breeding season brings opportunity, investment and plenty of moving parts.

With valuable bloodstock and important commercial relationships involved, clear agreements from the outset can help avoid uncertainty later.

From stud and breeding arrangements to ownership agreements, the details matter, particularly when responsibilities, costs, risk and commercial expectations are shared between parties.

M+E works closely with the thoroughbred industry to help clients put practical arrangements in place that protect their interests while keeping business moving.

Because when the season gets busy, clarity at the beginning can make all the difference.

Strong legal support starts with understanding the environment our clients operate in.

For rural businesses and communities, that means understanding the commercial realities, local industries and challenges that can shape important decisions.

M+E combines legal knowledge and experience with genuine regional understanding to support clients across NSW with advice that is practical, considered and grounded in their circumstances.

It’s an approach shaped by our rural roots and strengthened by the relationships we continue to build across regional NSW.
