If you see a pattern of controlling behaviour in your relationship you should reach out for help. Everyone should feel their own sense of agency, and safe at home.

You can call 1800Respect or your local family violence or relationship centre.

Separation can be one of the most dangerous times as the perpetrator feels like they are losing control and their behaviour may escalate. Sometimes there is no physical violence in a relationship until after separation. It is important to plan a safe exit.

Many of the co-parenting disputes we see are not solvable by lawyers or courts. They are caused by underlying communication problems that fuel conflict.

If you are dealing with a high conflict person, we highly recommend you research ways in which to improve your side of the communication. Bill Eddy is a guru on this and has developed the BIFF style of communication. Information about that and many other valuable resources can be found on his High Conflict Institute website.
