It was a pleasure connecting with Carers WA in August to discuss elder abuse prevention and the support available within our community.

Faith and Donna from our Older People's Rights Service (OPRS) visited the Carers WA offices to speak with carer representatives about the work OPRS does in the prevention of and response to elder abuse.

The session sparked some great discussion, particularly around enduring powers of attorney and guardianship, with attendees actively engaging and sharing questions throughout.

Thank you to for the opportunity to connect with those who play such an important role in supporting family and friend carers across Western Australia.

Today is International Day of Older Persons.

This year’s theme, The Age of Longevity: Rethinking systems for Longer Lives, asks us to consider whether the systems around us are keeping pace with the reality of longer lives.

It also marks the UN Human Rights Office’s campaign, which challenges organisations and communities to look at the assumptions about age built into everyday rules, systems, and cut-offs.

Today is an opportunity to recognise the contributions of older people, challenge ageism, and think about how we can build systems that work for people at every stage of life.

NAIDOC Week may have come to an end, but our commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continues every day.
Over the last financial year, Encompass Legal & Community Services supported 174 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across our service.
We are committed to providing services that are respectful, accessible and culturally safe, while continuing to listen, learn and strengthen the way we work alongside Aboriginal communities. Thank you to the individuals, communities and partner organisations who trust us to walk alongside them.

Our regional education for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) wrapped up last week. Our busy volunteer peer educators delivered a series of talks in York, Toodyay, Northam and Geraldton this month highlighting the importance of recognising the signs of elder abuse and how negative ageist stereotypes can lead to the mistreatment of older people.

Our peer educators share their own experiences of elder abuse which makes it a unique and valuable way to reach our older community. What better way to connect with older people in the regions than with older people talking to older people about the important isues they are facing.

Last Friday, OPRS program manager Faith visited Canning Vale Medical Centre to talk about the OPRS legal and advocacy assistance available for elder abuse victims.

The medical centre is part of a partnership project between WA Primary Health Alliance, Starick and Anglicare WA, which embeds specialist social workers into GP clinics across Armadale, Gosnells and Canning to help identify family, domestic and sexual violence, creating safe spaces for victim-survivors to disclose abuse.

Faith highlighted the many forms elder abuse can take, for example, through family and domestic violence, as well as the misuse of enduring powers of attorney and guardianship. She emphasised the importance of older people receiving comprehensive, impartial advice before signing these documents.
