It has been a busy time in the Pilbara for the Aboriginal Family Legal Services Port Hedland team, connecting with community and supporting conversations across two key events.

On National Sorry Day, the team attended a community gathering hosted by Yorgum Healing Services at Lotteries House. The day was an opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the Stolen Generations, honouring those who were forcibly removed from their families under past government policies. AFLS supported the event by delivering the Healing Hands program and staff attended alongside stakeholders and community members.

The team also hosted a Law Week BBQ at the Port Hedland Courthouse, raising awareness about the legal system and access to justice. In collaboration with Legal Aid Western Australia, the event brought together community members and services for a yarn, information sharing, and a free sausage sizzle.

The team recently attended the City of Kwinana 2026 National Reconciliation Breakfast as part of National Reconciliation Week.

A beautiful Welcome to Country was delivered by Trevor Walley, followed by the national live screening from Optus Stadium. The event highlighted the importance of listening, learning, and working together to create stronger and more connected communities.

AFLS staff Carly Terry (Administration Officer) and Violet Nou (Family Advocate) attended the event alongside 50+ community members and stakeholders.

The Port Hedland team attended the Hedland National Reconciliation Week breakfast at Shay Gap Park, hosted by Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation.

Organisations from across Hedland gathered alongside respected Elders and emerging Elders to share stories, reflect, and yarn about what reconciliation means to each of us.

The morning created a space for connection, understanding, and strengthening relationships within our community.

National Reconciliation Week reminds us that reconciliation is built through listening, learning, respect, and walking together toward stronger futures for all.

Today, the Geraldton community came together in strong numbers for the annual Reconciliation Walk hosted by the Justice Community Network Committee.

Aboriginal Family Legal Services Geraldton staff, Gavin and Steven, who are active members of the Justice Community Network Committee, played an important role in assisting with the planning and coordination of this year’s walk alongside fellow committee members and community organisations. Their ongoing commitment to supporting community-led initiatives and strengthening local partnerships helped bring today’s meaningful event together for the Geraldton community.

The walk commenced from Rocks Laneway, continuing along the foreshore before returning for community presentations, a BBQ, student performances, and heartfelt reflections shared by community members.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such a empowering community event.

Today marks the beginning of Reconciliation Week, this year’s 2026 theme, “All In,” reminds us that reconciliation is an ongoing journey. It is a time for all Australians to reflect, learn, listen, and walk together toward a future built on truth, respect, and shared understanding.

At Aboriginal Family Legal Services, reconciliation is more than a conversation, it is reflected in the work we continue to deliver alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families, and communities across Western Australia. Through advocacy, legal support, community engagement, education, and culturally safe services, we continue working toward stronger futures grounded in respect, healing, and self-determination.

Together, we continue walking forward with strength, truth, and unity.

Today, the Geraldton Aboriginal Family Legal Services team had the privilege of attending the National Sorry Day event at Geraldton Senior High School.

Our team joined students, staff, and community members in a meaningful morning of reflection, connection, and respect. Together, we took part in laying purple flower artworks within the school’s Sorry Day garden, honouring the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations and Aboriginal families across generations.

The event also included a beautiful morning tea and a powerful contemporary dance performance by students, sharing stories through movement, and expression.

We thank Geraldton Senior High School for creating a safe and respectful space for truth-telling, healing, and community connection on this important day.

National Sorry Day is more than a date on the calendar for our people.

It is a reminder of the pain our families carry, the stories that were silenced, and the strength of our old people who survived it all.

At Aboriginal Family Legal Services, we honour our survivors, our ancestors, and every family affected. We acknowledge the truth of our history and the importance of healing for future generations.

We stand strong in culture.

We stand strong in community.

And we continue to walk forward together.

We will continue to empower our communities through the grassroots work delivered across Western Australia, walking alongside our people through advocacy, support, education, and culturally safe services.

🎶Music has a powerful way of bringing people together, sharing stories, and celebrating culture across generations.

The Pinjarra AFLS team recently had the privilege of spending time with Peter Salmon following his appearances on ABC’s The Piano alongside Rosie Sitorus. Peter’s story is one of resilience, connection, and a lifetime of experiences across pastoral country throughout northern Western Australia.

Born on Maroonah Station, north-east of Carnarvon, Peter has spent much of his life working on stations across the north of WA. It was deadly to see his story and talent shared on a national platform.

Thank you Peter, for sharing your journey, music, and presence with us! See the link below to read Peter's journey.

Lipsticks for Law Week đź’„

As part of Law Week, the AFLS team is proud to launch the Lipsticks for Law Week initiative, a small but powerful campaign designed to support women experiencing family and domestic violence.
Over 100 specially prepared lipstick containers will be distributed throughout community, each containing discreet, folded inserts with important information including:

đź’„Domestic and family violence support services
đź’„Emergency contacts and helplines
đź’„Simple safety planning guidance

These lipstick containers have been thoughtfully designed to provide a safe and discreet way for women to access potentially life-saving information without raising suspicion. They also offer a small concealable space where emergency cash can be safely stored, helping women access transport or immediate necessities if they need to leave an unsafe situation quickly.

At AFLS, we understand that safety looks different for every woman, and sometimes the smallest tools can create pathways to support, choice, and safety.

This event is proudly supported by the Public Purposes Trust Fund through the Law Society of Western Australia.
