Planning to travel overseas while on a Bridging Visa?

Here’s an important update for your team regarding Bridging Visa B (BVB) applications, tailored for Australian English usage:

Important Processing Update – Bridging Visa B (BVB)

Following the Department's latest guidance, applicants should submit their BVB application at least four weeks before their planned travel date.

Key Points:
• Assessment Process: BVB applications are handled by the same team processing your substantive visa. Please allow sufficient time for assessment.
• Short-Notice Travel: BVBs are unlikely to be granted at short notice (within a few days of lodging), except in compelling and compassionate circumstances.
• Plan Ahead: To avoid disruptions to your travel plans, lodge your application well in advance of your intended departure.

Stay tuned to our social media and our website for the latest updates and advice on Australian visa processing.

What Happens When Your Visa Is About to Expire?

Understanding how bridging visas work can help you remain lawful in Australia while your substantive visa application is being processed, but the conditions attached to your bridging visa can vary.

Here’s what you need to know about:

✅BVA — Usually granted automatically when you apply onshore for a new substantive visa before your current visa ends. It allows you to remain lawfully in Australia while waiting for a decision, but does not include international travel rights.

✅ BVB — Allows you to leave and re-enter Australia while waiting for your substantive visa decision. You must apply for and receive the BVB while you are still in Australia.

✅ BVC — For people who applied for a substantive visa when they did not hold one. It can keep you lawful while the application is processed, but usually does not provide travel rights and has limited work rights unless approved.

Your rights while holding a bridging visa depend on which bridging visa you hold and the conditions attached to it. These can include your ability to stay, work and travel.

Is your visa expiring soon? Speak with our team to understand your options.
