Home Affairs received 2,166 expressions of interest in the April to June 2026 round and sent 248 invitations. Of those, 192 went to priority three, people with achievements in Tier One sectors, and 38 to priority four, Tier Two sectors. Fewer than 5 went to priority one and fewer than 20 to priority two.

You need an invitation to apply, and most expressions of interest in this round did not receive one.

New rules for Student visa applications started on 2 October 2026.

Most temporary visa holders in Australia can no longer apply for a Student visa while they are onshore. That includes current Student visa holders applying for another Student visa, unless an exemption applies. If you can't apply onshore, you need to be outside Australia when you lodge and when the visa is granted.

Student visa applicants also can't include a partner or children in a new application unless an exemption applies. Those exemptions cover PhD students, people sponsored by DFAT or Defence, foreign government scholarship holders, and eligible students from Pacific or ASEAN countries. Current Student visa holders can no longer add family members after their visa is granted.

Applications lodged before 2 October are assessed under the earlier rules, and a Student visa you already hold is not affected.

General information only. Eligibility depends on your circumstances. Dexter Lee, Registered Migration Agent, MARN 2518927.
