WARNING ……
Never act on emailed bank account details without first calling the person / company you are paying the funds to so that you can confirm the account details.
No matter how big or small the amount is you are transferring, call first to ensure the details are correct.
This is very sad for the people involved.
TIPS WHEN TRANSFERRING MONEY
* call who you are paying to confirm the BSB and ACCOUNT details
* don’t call who you are paying from the contact details on the email as if it is scammers you could be calling the scammers directly. Look up the details yourself to ensure you have the correct number
* when transferring large sums, transfer $1.00 first and once you have verbal confirmation the $1.00 has been received safely, you can transfer the balance
* when replying to an email always click forward rather than reply as if your emails have been intercepted you could be replying to the scammers
* if the email for payment comes from a hotmail or gmail account or accounts like this, always call who you are paying to confirm the details and account number
* if the transfer is for a large sum of money go to the business you are paying in person to obtain their account details
* always exercise caution when using free wifi in public places
