“I drive to work every day… can I claim my kilometres on tax?”

It’s one of the most common questions we get during tax season — and the answer is: not always.

A lot of people assume driving to and from work is automatically deductible because it’s work-related. But in most cases, regular trips between home and work can’t be claimed.

That said, there are some situations where you may be able to claim your kms.

Watch this to understand what counts, what doesn’t, and what the ATO actually looks for

Save this for tax time if you’re unsure what you can really claim.

Big changes to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) could be coming

The Government has announced proposed CGT changes that could start from 1 July 2027.

Under the proposal, the current 50% CGT discount for individuals and trusts may be replaced with a new system that includes cost-base indexation and a 30% minimum tax on capital gains.

If introduced, these changes could affect Australians investing in things like property, shares, crypto, and businesses.

At this stage, they’re still proposed changes — but if passed, it could become one of the biggest tax updates for investors in years.

What subscriptions can you actually claim at tax time? 👀

If a subscription helps you earn your income, there’s a good chance it could be claimable.

Think things like Canva, Adobe, industry memberships, online training, or accounting software used for work.
But personal subscriptions like Netflix or Spotify?

Usually not deductible.

A simple rule:
If it’s work-related, it may be claimable.
If it’s personal, it’s not.

Watch this before you start claiming subscriptions this tax season👌🏻

This guide breaks down the most common tax deductions for train drivers in a simple, easy-to-understand way — so you can feel confident you’re claiming what you’re entitled to, while staying compliant with the ATO. (And don’t forget to keep your receipts!)

How does the 2026 Federal Budget impact low-income earners?

One of the main changes is a small tax cut starting from 1 July 2026. The tax rate for income between $18,201 and $45,000 is expected to reduce from 16% to 15%.

For some Australians, that could mean a little extra relief at tax time, but it’s unlikely to fully offset the ongoing pressure from rent, groceries, bills and everyday expenses.

So while there’s support in the Budget, many people may not notice a huge difference day to day.

Watch this for a quick run-down on what it could mean for you.

HECS-HELP repayments have changed in 2026.

For the 2025–26 financial year, the minimum repayment threshold has increased to $67,000.

But the biggest change? Your compulsory repayment is now calculated only on the income above the threshold - instead your full repayment income.

For some Australians with a HELP debt, that could mean lower repayments throughout the year.

Your final repayment amount is still worked out by the ATO when you lodge your tax return.

Definitely one to be aware of this tax season.

Save this for tax time, or send it to someone with a HELP debt.

Federal Budget 2026 is bringing in major changes to negative gearing in Australia.

From 1 July 2027, negative gearing for residential investment properties may be limited to new residential builds only.

But if you already own an investment property before 12 May 2026, 7:30pm AEST, current negative gearing rules may still continue to apply under the proposed grandfathering provisions.

The proposed changes could significantly impact property investors, future buyers, and investment strategies across Australia.
