Yay for girl lawyers!
History was made today, and 119 years of tradition broken, with the appointment of Justice Jayne Jagot to the High Court of Australia, giving Australia its first ever female majority in the High Court.
Her Honour's career is as inspiring, and ground breaking, as the historic change she has brought; graduating law school in 1991, becoming a partner in 1997, joining the bar in 2022 and then only 4 years later, receiving her first judicial appointment as Judge of the NSW Land and Environment Court.
She held additional judicial appointments across the ACT Supreme Court and Federal Court, and was Deputy President of the Copyright Tribunal of Australia, before becoming the 7th woman appointed to the High Court.
Her Honour's appointment will start on the retirement of Justice Keane AC on 17 October 2022.
It is difficult to put into words what a historic moment this is, and what this means not just for women lawyers, but for the entire legal profession in Australia, so we will leave it at just a wholehearted congratulations to Justice Jagot and a sincere thank you for being one of the role models we all need to see!
