This morning our team participated in Law Access’ 2023 Walk for Justice event, raising funds to support equal access to justice. Over 800 people registered for the event, and we are proud to have contributed to the over $150,000 raised.

We couldn’t have asked for a better morning - clear and sunny and lots of smiling faces!

Thank you to everyone who supported our team - whether big or small, your contribution has helped push the efforts of pro-bono work and further support those who are unable to access justice in the community.

2023 marks one year since we moved into our first office.

After running a virtual practice for 6 years, moving into an office brought its fair share of changes and challenges. Having both a remote and co-located team has meant adopting new practices and modes of staying connected and productive.

After a year of being hybrid, Jo Alilovic has asked herself - is hybrid the best business model?

The answer? For us, it’s not without its challenges, but it can certainly be rewarding.

In today's blog, Jo shares the top three challenges she has faced as a business owner in adopting a hybrid working model.

With her challenges, she shares solutions for those who may be struggling with:
- decision-making paralysis: choosing between working from home or from the office;
- the guilt, as a business owner, of not being in your office space more; and
- maintaining effective connection and management of your team.

What about you? Are you loving hybrid - or just suffering it for the benefit of the team?

12 months ago, I decided to embark on an experiment by taking on an office location for my law firm after 6 years of running a virtual practice. The purpose of this experiment – to test the hypothesis that hybrid is the best business model.

It’s important to practice what you preach.

Jo encourages real flexibility - hey, she wrote a book on it! - and likes to explore just how far it can go. Recently, Jo took a “workcation” to Coral Bay. In amongst snorkeling, reading on the beach and attending a family wedding - she scheduled in hours to work.

Like flexible start/finish times, 4-day work weeks and buying more annual leave, workcations are just another way to get some flexibility in your working life.

We never take for granted the privilege we have of being able to work flexibly and from anywhere (with an internet connection!).

What’s your favourite way to work flexibly?

It’s becoming harder to say no to flexible work requests.

Not only do statistics say more and more employee’s want it and are choosing jobs accordingly, but the law is also changing to make it harder to lawfully say no.

From 6 June 2023:
✅ Pregnant women and those experiencing domestic violence will be included in the groups of people who have a legal right to make a flexible work request;
✅ Any decision to refuse a request can’t be made without reasonable business grounds and following discussions with the employee;
✅ Employee’s will have a right to appeal a refusal to the Fair Work Commission.

To get more detail on these changes, watch our second instalment of 3 Minutes with 3D HR talking about these changes to the Fair Work Act.

𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁

From 7 December 2022, the government changed the FW Act to make it unlawful to prohibit employees talking about their pay.

Watch this 3 minute video where Jo shares the details and how they affect your employment contracts and business operations.

Over the next week, we will release two more videos discussing two other major changes to the FW Act around:
1. Flexible work arrangements.
2. Limitations on fixed and maximum term contracts.

Among many others, it is important to understand how these changes will impact your business.

Today might be a day associated with personal relationships, but it doesn’t mean you should forget about your team at work! How about showing them a bit of love?

Take today to show appreciation for your team - whether with a surprise morning tea, bringing flowers into the office, or even just sharing your gratitude for their hard work, small acts of kindness can be just the thing someone needs today.

How will you show love for your team today?

𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱

In an effort to mitigate the impact that family and domestic violence can have on our employees, the Federal Government has introduced new paid family and domestic violence leave provisions which are now in place for large employers (and 1 August 2023 for small employers).

Three key things to know about this leave:
1. Employees will be entitled to the full 10 days of paid leave from time of commencement.
2. Leave does not accrue yearly. It resets on an employee’s anniversary date.
3. Employers are not entitled to indicate on a payslip that family and domestic violence leave is being taken.

Now is the time to update your payroll to provide for this leave, and ensure that staff know how to request, and respond to requests for, this leave.

To find out more about these changes, and how you can address them with compassion and sensitivity, see our detailed blog post and Jo’s recent comments to HCA Magazine.

We are very lucky to have welcomed a Nardurna piece of artwork into our office space! ✨ The ‘One of Many’ piece features symbols of hills, fire, rivers and people to bring to life one of the many fishing spots artist Ryhia Dank would visit.

This serves as a wonderful reminder of the rich culture Australia is founded on, and the beauty of storytelling through art. You can find more of ’s pieces here https://nardurna.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIteHg-ciC_QIVCzErCh0LRAxmEAAYASAAEgINjvD_BwE
