From 21 September 2026, new protections are in place for renters experiencing domestic and family violence.

The changes make it easier for someone experiencing violence to leave a tenancy without being responsible for break-lease costs. They also mean the responsibility for notifying remaining co-tenants now sits with the landlord or agent, rather than the person leaving.

There are also additional protections around rental bonds, property damage, privacy and tenancy databases.

If you or someone you know is affected by these changes, understanding your rights can make an already difficult situation a little easier to navigate.
