If you are currently studying on a Subclass 500 visa in Australia, leaving the country during scheduled classes without formal, written permission from your institution is a high-risk move.
If you are unable to explain your travel dates, course progress, or why you are travelling during active classes, it raises red flags and your student visa may be cancelled at the airport.
Therefore, it is important to always obtain formal, written leave approval from your school before booking overseas flights.
Carry your documentation. When traveling back to Australia, keep your leave approval letter, COE, and enrollment details easily accessible in your carry-on baggage.
Know your conditions. Protecting your lawful status in Australia means staying proactive—not reactive.
Facing questions about your student visa status, an upcoming trip, or an unexpected Notice of Intention to Consider Cancellation (NOICC)? Don't leave your legal rights to chance

A section 57 notice will normally be sent by the department if there is any finding that you may have been involved in any such activities.
This is not a fishing expedition from the Department but a chance given to you to put your side of the story.
This usually happens if someone reported you but the case has not been finalised or any charges brought against you till date by the Police.
So if you ever come across any such situations- ensure that you keep proper records, send emails to your employer, keep things in writing so that you can always provide them in the future.
Best yer- talk to a Lawyer/Solicitor as soon as you think something is not right. You may have to pay some money at that time but it will save you a lot of time, stress down the track.

If you are planning to buy extra time on your 485 visa by delaying the lodgement as you have a lot of time left on your student visa- think again.
Waiting too long can cost you your post-study work rights—or even put your lawful status in Australia at risk!
Here are two major traps international graduates fall into:
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟲-𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽: You must lodge your 485 visa within 6 months of your course completion date. Miss that strict deadline by even one day, and you lose your eligibility entirely—no exceptions!
𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Simply finishing your studies does not freeze your Subclass 500 obligations. If you stop studying and remain in Australia without maintaining an active enrolment, you risk breaching Condition 8202 (maintaining enrolment). This can lead to a Notice of Intention to Consider Cancellation (NOICC) and potential visa cancellation!
𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗠𝗔'𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲
Never treat remaining time on a student visa as a reason to postpone your 485 lodgement. Plan early, gather your English test results, health checks, and completion letters, and lodge your application well within the 6-month window to ensure a seamless transition to full work rights.
