There may be times in your life when it is necessary to have someone to manage your financial or personal affairs. This may arise because there's an immediate short-term need, such as an extended overseas trip, or a long-term need to plan for an aged person or someone with a disability or illness.
A power of attorney grants another person, the donee, the power to manage your financial or personal affairs. An enduring power of attorney continues to operate even after you become legally incapacitated - eg if you become of unsound mind or are unable to communicate in any way, perhaps after a stroke. Taking the time to make an enduring power of attorney means that your financial affairs can be looked after by someone who you know and trust after you become legally incapacitated.
You cannot make a power of attorney after you have become legally incapacitated. It is wise to make a power of attorney, including an enduring power of attorney, whilst you have legal capacity.
