On Thursday 18 April, our family violence lawyer Brielle attended the morning seminar - Legislative Roadmap: Criminalising Coercive Control in Australia held DART Group Australia.

“All family and domestic violence (FDV) is underpinned by coercive control, a pattern of manipulative and abusive behaviours in intimate partner relationships that is designed to intimidate, isolate, degrade and trap a person to prevent them from leaving a relationship. It can involve physical or non-physical harm or both as part of the coercion and gets worse over time. Coercive control is recognised as a serious social problem that affects mainly women and children and is now considered the leading predictor among women of severe physical violence, victim-suicide, and intimate partner homicide in Australia” (excerpt taken from the DART Institute’s breakfast seminar handout ‘Legislative Roadmap: Criminalising Coercive Control in Australia).

The forum explored the current state of legislating coercive control around Australia, the social impact coercive control has on victim-survivors as well as providing an opportunity for attendees to engage in panel discussions around the effectiveness of criminalising coercive control.

It was an absolute privilege to hear from everyone involved and to see the passion and experience of everyone in the room committed to eradicating family and domestic violence.

If you, or anyone you know are experiencing family violence, please know that you are not alone and there are services that can help you. For legal advice and assistance relating to family violence, restraining orders or family law, please contact our service on 9622 5200 or at [email protected].
